Royalton is a town in Windsor County, Vermont, United States. In 2020, about 2,750 people lived there. The town includes the villages of Royalton, South Royalton, and North Royalton. Vermont Law School, the only law school in the state, is in South Royalton.

History of Royalton
Royalton was officially created on November 23, 1769. This was done by Cadwallader Colden, who was the Lieutenant Governor of New York at the time. The first families to settle here permanently arrived in 1771.
Royalton in the American Revolution
During the American War of Independence, Royalton was re-chartered by the Vermont Republic in 1781. In 1780, the town experienced the Royalton Raid. This was the last major attack by the British in New England during the war. Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, a French hero of the Revolutionary War, also visited Royalton.
Important People and Ideas
Joseph Smith, who founded the Mormon religion, was born nearby. His birthplace memorial is located in Royalton.
In 1974, Royalton College hosted a special meeting about "Austrian economics." This meeting helped to bring new attention to this way of thinking about how economies work.
Royalton in Pop Culture and Economy
You might have seen Royalton without knowing it! A picture of the town was used in the opening credits of the TV show Gilmore Girls. It stood in for the fictional town of Stars Hollow.
In the middle of the 1900s, Royalton's economy was mostly about:
- Lumbering (cutting down trees for wood)
- Dairy farming (producing milk)
- Raising chickens
- Growing fresh vegetables
- Making maple sugar

Royalton is located on the east side of the Green Mountains. The White River flows right through the middle of the town.
