About Sadhguru's Life
His Early Years
Jagadish Vasudev, also known as Jaggi, was born on September 3, 1957. He grew up in a Telugu family in Mysore, India. He was the youngest of five children. His father was an eye doctor, and his mother took care of their home.
His Education Journey
After finishing school, Jaggi wasn't sure about going to college right away. But a year later, he decided to study English literature at the University of Mysore. He did very well in his studies. Even though his parents wanted him to study more, Jaggi chose to start his own businesses instead.
Starting His Businesses
After college, Jaggi started a poultry farm in Mysore. He liked this business because it didn't need constant attention. This gave him time to do other things he enjoyed, like writing poetry. His business did well, but his family wasn't happy about him working with chickens.
So, Jaggi decided to try something new. He started a construction company called Buildaids with a friend who was an engineer. Even without formal engineering training, he used what he learned from building his farm. When he was 25, after some special spiritual experiences, he closed his businesses. He then began to travel and teach yoga.
In 1983, he taught his first yoga class in Mysore. He traveled around Karnataka and Hyderabad on his motorcycle, teaching his style of yoga called Sahaja Sthiti Yoga. He used money from renting out his poultry farm and gave away the money he received from his students.
His Spiritual Path
Sadhguru had his first big spiritual experience when he was 25 years old. On September 23, 1982, he was sitting on a rock on Chamundi Hill. He felt like everything around him – the air, the rock – became a part of him. After this, he had another similar experience at home.
Six weeks later, he decided to leave his businesses. He traveled a lot to understand these experiences better. After about a year of meditation and traveling, he chose to teach yoga. He wanted to share his inner experiences with others.
His Personal Life
When he was younger, Sadhguru loved riding motorcycles. He often rode to Chamundi Hills and even to Nepal. He believes in eating vegetarian food. However, if he travels and can't find vegetarian options, he sometimes eats seafood. He also practices the Sun Salutation for 40 minutes every day.
Sadhguru married Vijaykumari in 1984. They had one child, a daughter named Radhe, in 1990. Vijaykumari passed away on January 23, 1997. Radhe studied a classical Indian dance called Bharatanatyam. In 2014, she married Sandeep Narayan, who is an Indian classical singer.
Isha Foundation's Work
In 1992, Sadhguru started the Isha Foundation. This foundation helps him with his spiritual, environmental, and educational activities. In 1994, he bought land near the Velliangiri mountains in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Here, he opened the Isha Yoga Center. He is still the head of the Isha Foundation, and many volunteers help run its activities. The foundation offers yoga programs called Isha Yoga. It also works to improve education in rural India through a program called Isha Vidhya.
Helping the Environment
Through the Isha Foundation, Sadhguru has started many projects to protect the environment. These include Project GreenHands (PGH), Rally for Rivers, Cauvery Calling, and Save Soil.
- Project GreenHands (PGH): This project helps with water and soil problems in Tamil Nadu by planting many trees.
- Cauvery Calling: Started in 2019, this campaign focuses on planting trees along the Cauvery river. The goal is to help the river's water levels and the groundwater.
- Rally for Rivers: In 2017, Sadhguru launched this campaign to get people to support efforts to bring rivers back to life across India. It's similar to Cauvery Calling.
- Journey to Save Soil: In 2022, Sadhguru rode his motorcycle for 100 days from London to India. He did this to raise awareness about soil degradation (when soil becomes unhealthy) and how important it is to use natural materials in farming.
In May 2022, he spoke to leaders from 195 countries at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. He talked about the "Journey to Save Soil" campaign. Famous people like Trevor Noah and Joe Rogan have also invited Sadhguru to discuss this movement. On World Environment Day in 2022, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, met with Sadhguru to talk about improving soil health.
His Speeches and Books
Sadhguru has written over thirty books. Some of them, like Inner Engineering: A Yogi's Guide to Joy, have been very popular.
He often gives public speeches at important places around the world. These include the United Nations, the British House of Lords, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has also spoken at the annual World Economic Forum several times.

His Views on Politics
When asked how to choose the "correct political stance," Sadhguru said that he doesn't belong to any political party. He believes that people shouldn't join parties like a "tribe." Instead, he encourages everyone to look at what different parties have done and vote for the one that makes the most sense.
