About Sadhguru's Life
Early Years and Education
Jagadish Vasudev was born on September 3, 1957. His family was from the Telugu people in Mysore, India. He was the youngest of five children. His father was an eye doctor, and his mother managed their home.
After finishing school, Vasudev studied English literature at the University of Mysore. He did very well in his studies. Even though his parents wanted him to study more, he decided to start his own businesses instead.
Starting Businesses
After college, Vasudev started a poultry farm in Mysore. He chose this business because it gave him free time. He used this time to do other things, like writing poetry. His business made good money. Later, he also started a construction company called Buildaids. He used what he learned from building his farm to help with construction.
When he was 25, Sadhguru had some special spiritual experiences. Because of these, he closed his businesses. He then began to travel and teach yoga.
Teaching Yoga and Spirituality
In 1983, Sadhguru taught his first yoga class in Mysore. He traveled around Karnataka and Hyderabad on his motorcycle. He taught his unique style of yoga, called Sahaja Sthiti Yoga. He used money from renting his poultry farm to live. He gave all the money from his students to charity.
Sadhguru had his first big spiritual experience on September 23, 1982. He was sitting on a rock on Chamundi Hill. He felt like everything around him, including the air and the rock, became part of him. After this, he traveled and meditated for about a year. He then decided to teach yoga to share his experiences with others.
Family Life
In his younger days, Vasudev loved riding motorcycles. He often rode to Chamundi Hills and even to Nepal. He believes in eating vegetarian food. However, if no vegetarian food is available while traveling, he sometimes eats seafood. He also practices the Sun Salutation for 40 minutes every day.
Vasudev married Vijaykumari in 1984. They had one child, a daughter named Radhe, in 1990. Vijaykumari passed away on January 23, 1997. Radhe studied Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance. She married Sandeep Narayan, an Indian classical vocalist, in 2014.
Isha Foundation and Its Work
In 1992, Sadhguru started the Isha Foundation. This organization helps with spiritual, environmental, and educational activities. In 1994, he opened the Isha Yoga Center near the Velliangiri mountains in Coimbatore. Most of the foundation's work is done by volunteers. The foundation offers yoga programs called Isha Yoga. It also works to improve education in rural India through a program called Isha Vidhya.
Helping the Environment
Sadhguru and the Isha Foundation have started many projects to protect the environment. These include:
- Project GreenHands (PGH): This project plants trees to help with water and soil problems in Tamil Nadu.
- Cauvery Calling: Started in 2019, this campaign plants trees along the Cauvery river. The goal is to bring back water to the river and the ground.
- Rally for Rivers: Launched in 2017, this campaign encourages people to support efforts to make India's rivers healthy again.
- Journey to Save Soil: In 2022, Sadhguru rode a motorcycle from London to India for 100 days. This journey raised awareness about soil degradation (when soil becomes unhealthy). It also promoted using natural materials in farming.
In May 2022, Sadhguru spoke to leaders from 195 countries at a United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification meeting. He talked about the "Journey to Save Soil" campaign. Famous people like Trevor Noah and Joe Rogan have also invited Sadhguru to discuss this movement. On World Environment Day in 2022, India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, met with Sadhguru to talk about soil health.
Some organizations, like the UN FAO, say that most of the Earth's topsoil could be at risk by 2050. There are different ideas about how effective the "Save Soil" campaign is. Some experts believe that using organic farming methods is a good solution.

Scientific Discussions
Sadhguru has made some claims that do not match what scientists generally agree on. For example, he has talked about using mercury in traditional Indian medicine. However, many countries, including India, have agreed to ban mercury use because it can be harmful. He has also claimed he can make mercury solid at room temperature, which scientists have said is not possible.
He has also discussed how a lunar eclipse might affect the body's energy. These ideas are not supported by scientific research.
