Satya Pal Malik (born 24 July 1946) is an important Indian politician. He has held many significant positions in the government. One of his most notable roles was serving as the 10th and last Governor of the state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. During his time as Governor, a big change happened: the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was removed on 5 August 2019.
After his time in Jammu and Kashmir, he became the 18th Governor of Goa. Later, he also served as the 21st Governor of Meghalaya until October 2022. Before becoming a Governor, Mr. Malik was a member of Parliament in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. He also served as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Early Life and Education
Satya Pal Malik was born in a village called Hisawada in the Baghpat area of Uttar Pradesh. He belongs to a Jat family. For his education, he studied at Meerut College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a law degree (LLB). His journey into politics began early. In 1968–69, he was elected as the president of the students' union at his college.
Political Journey
Starting in State Politics
Mr. Malik's first public job was as a member of the legislative assembly (MLA) for Baghpat. He won this election as a member of Charan Singh's Bharatiya Kranti Dal party. He received a good number of votes, beating his closest opponent. Later, he joined another party called Bharatiya Lok Dal and became its general secretary.
Moving to National Politics
Satya Pal Malik then moved on to national politics, serving in India's Parliament.
- He was a member of the Rajya Sabha (which is like the upper house of Parliament) representing Uttar Pradesh from 1980 to 1989.
- From 1989 to 1991, he was a member of the 9th Lok Sabha (the lower house of Parliament) from the Aligarh area. He was part of the Janata Dal party at that time.
- In 2012, he was appointed as a National Vice-President of the BJP.
Serving as Governor
Mr. Malik has served as the Governor of several Indian states. A Governor is like the head of a state, representing the President of India.
- From 30 September 2017 to 21 August 2018, he was the Governor of Bihar.
- For a short period, from 21 March 2018 to 28 August 2018, he also had an extra responsibility as the Governor of Odisha.
- From 23 August 2018 to 30 October 2019, he served as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
- He was the Governor of Goa from 3 November 2019 to 18 August 2020.
- His last role as Governor was for Meghalaya, from 18 August 2020 to 3 October 2022.
Political Views
Supporting Farmers' Protests
Satya Pal Malik has often spoken out in support of farmers. He showed his support for the 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest. He has encouraged the government to listen to the farmers' concerns and resolve their issues peacefully. He believes it is important to understand the challenges faced by the farming community.
