Satya Pal Malik (born 24 July 1946) is an Indian politician who has held important positions in the government. He served as the last Governor of the state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. During his time there, a big change happened when the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was removed on August 5, 2019. After that, he became the Governor of Goa and later the Governor of Meghalaya, serving until October 2022.
His journey in politics began in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1977. He also represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, which is one of India's two houses of Parliament, from 1980 to 1989. Later, he was a member of the 9th Lok Sabha (the other house of Parliament) from Aligarh between 1989 and 1991. Before becoming Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, he was the Governor of Bihar from October 2017 to August 2018. He also briefly held an extra role as Governor of Odisha in 2018.

Early Life and Education
Satya Pal Malik was born in a village called Hisawada in the Baghpat area of Uttar Pradesh. He comes from a Jat family. For his education, he earned degrees in Bachelor of Science and LLB (Law) from Meerut University. His political career started early when he was elected as the president of the students' union in 1968–69.
Political Journey
Starting in State Politics
Malik's first public office was as a member of the legislative assembly for Baghpat. He won this election as a member of Charan Singh's Bharatiya Kranti Dal party. He later joined the Bharatiya Lok Dal party and became its general secretary.
Moving to National Politics
Satya Pal Malik has held several important roles in India's national politics:
- From 1980 to 1989, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh.
- From 1989 to 1991, he was a member of the Lok Sabha from Aligarh, representing the Janata Dal party.
- In 2012, he was appointed as the National Vice-President of the BJP.
Serving as Governor
Malik has served as the Governor for several Indian states:
- From September 30, 2017, to August 21, 2018, he was the Governor of Bihar.
- From March 21, 2018, to August 28, 2018, he also had an additional role as the Governor of Odisha.
- From August 23, 2018, to October 30, 2019, he was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
- From November 3, 2019, to August 18, 2020, he served as the Governor of Goa.
- From August 18, 2020, to October 3, 2022, he was the Governor of Meghalaya.
Views on Important Issues
Support for Farmers
Satya Pal Malik has shown strong support for farmers. In November 2021, he spoke at an event and shared his thoughts on the 2020–2021 Indian farmers' protest. He emphasized the importance of listening to the farmers' concerns.
Thoughts on the Pulwama Incident
In an interview in April 2023, Malik shared his perspective on the 2019 Pulwama attack. He mentioned that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had asked for aircraft to transport their personnel, but this request was not approved by the Home Ministry. He also pointed out that there might have been issues with intelligence gathering before the incident.
