History of Saxilby
What's in a Name?
The name Saxilby comes from the Viking language, Old Norse. It means "farmstead of a man called Saksulfr." In the Domesday Book from 1086, the village was called "Saxebi." For a long time, people often spelled it "Saxelby." The spelling "Saxilby" only became common in the late 1800s.
Early Times
The Romans built the Fossdyke, which goes through the Saxilby area. We don't know for sure if they lived right on the village site. However, Roman pottery has been found nearby, which suggests they might have settled in this area.
In the 800s, Viking invaders took over many parts of Lincolnshire, and some settled in Saxilby. Later, in the 1100s, the Normans started creating large estates called Manors. The Manor in the Saxilby area was given to Odo, who was the Bishop of Bayeux.

The 77 Service is run by PC Coaches of Lincoln. Stagecoach PLC operates the other bus routes.
Saxilby railway station, on the Doncaster to Lincoln Line, is very close to the village center. It was originally built by the Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Railway. You can catch trains from here to Lincoln, Sheffield, and Leeds, provided by Northern Rail. East Midlands Railways offers a train service between Doncaster and Peterborough. If you want to connect to the East Coast Mainline, you can do so at Retford Station, which is on the Lincoln to Sheffield line. Parking at Saxilby station is free, and there's a self-service ticket machine on Platform 1.
