Website The City of Seabrook, Texas

Seabrook is a city in Harris County, Texas, in the United States. A small part of its water area is in Chambers County. In 2020, about 13,618 people lived here. Seabrook is famous for its many fish markets along the waterfront. You can also find fun antique shops and cozy bed and breakfast places in its downtown area.

History of Seabrook

Seabrook is well-known for its fish markets on Waterfront Drive. Here, local shrimpers and fishermen bring in their daily catches. The city is next to the bay and has marshes where water from inland areas flows into the bay.

The land for Seabrook was bought in 1895 by Seabrook W. Sydnor. In March 1903, the Seabrook Company of Houston planned out the new town. This new town attracted fishermen, merchants, and new residents.

The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 destroyed the local school. But by 1905, it was rebuilt. Three teachers taught 100 students there. In 1947, the local schools became part of the Clear Creek Independent School District.

Seabrook's population grew from 200 to 560 people before the Great Depression. It then dropped to 200 in 1936. The population stayed around 400 from 1940 until 1947. That year, the Albert and Ernest Fay shipyard opened. This shipyard could handle 150 boats and created many jobs. This helped the population grow a lot.

Even after damage from Hurricane Carla, a bridge connecting Seabrook and Kemah was finished in 1961. With the new bridge and the Johnson Space Center (JSC) opening in Houston, Seabrook's population grew to about 6,000 people.

In 1986, a decision was made to build a new, taller bridge. This bridge was high enough for sailboats to pass under. Once it was finished, Highway 146 connected all the way from Galveston to Texas State Highway 225. This led to even more people moving to Seabrook.

Seabrook had a mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Ike on September 13, 2008. Hurricane Ike was one of the most damaging hurricanes to hit the United States. In Seabrook, the storm surge damaged roads and knocked out power for the whole city. Because Seabrook is surrounded by water, there was a lot of debris and boats on the roads. Many Seabrook residents did not have power or running water for up to a month after the hurricane.

Students in the Clear Creek Independent School District, which includes all Seabrook residents, missed almost three weeks of school. This was due to the evacuation and damage to buildings and roads.
