In late 2007, Mark Zuckerberg, who started Facebook, met Sheryl Sandberg. Zuckerberg was looking for a Chief Operating Officer (COO). He thought Sheryl was a "perfect fit" for the job. In March 2008, Facebook announced that Sheryl was joining as COO. She left Google for this new role.

After joining Facebook, Sheryl quickly worked to make the company profitable. Before she arrived, Facebook was mainly focused on building a cool website. They thought profits would come later. By 2010, Facebook started making money. Sheryl oversaw many parts of the company's business. This included sales, marketing, and human resources.

In 2012, she became the eighth person on Facebook's board of directors. She was the first woman to join the board. In April 2014, reports showed she had sold more than half of her Facebook shares. She still owned about 17.2 million shares. This was worth about $1 billion at the time.

Lean In Book

Sheryl Sandberg released her first book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, on March 11, 2013. She wrote it with Nell Scovell.

The book talks about leadership in business. It discusses why there are not enough women in leadership roles. It also covers ideas about feminism. By the fall of 2013, the book had sold over one million copies. It was a bestseller since it came out.

Lean In aims to help professional women reach their career goals. It also helps men who want a more fair society. The book says that women still face challenges in the workplace. These include unfair treatment and harassment. Sandberg also says women sometimes create their own barriers. This happens by believing in old ideas about gender roles. She argues that for things to change, women need to break these barriers. They should aim for and get leadership roles. The main goal is to encourage women to "lean in" to leadership. She believes more female leaders will create better chances for everyone.

A truly equal world would be one where women ran half our countries and companies and men ran half our homes.

Some people criticized the book. They said Sheryl was "too elitist." They also said she didn't understand the struggles of average women. For example, some felt the book didn't address challenges for mothers. Sheryl mentions these points in her book's introduction. She says she knows most women struggle to support their families. She wanted to offer advice that would have helped her earlier in life.

Option B Book

Sheryl Sandberg released her second book, Option B, in April 2017. She wrote it with Adam Grant, a professor. This book focuses on dealing with grief and building resilience in life's challenges. It gives helpful tips for families and communities. Over 2.75 million copies have been sold.

Ban Bossy Campaign

In March 2014, Sheryl Sandberg and Lean In started the Ban Bossy campaign. This was a TV and social media effort. It aimed to stop using the word bossy. They felt it hurt young girls. Videos with famous people like Beyoncé and Jennifer Garner were made. A website also offered school materials and leadership tips. People could promise not to use the word.

Sheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Foundation
