Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, often called Sonic Spinball, is a fun pinball video game from 1993. It was made by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega. This game is a spinoff from the popular Sonic the Hedgehog series. The story happens in the world of the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon show. In the game, you play as Sonic, who needs to stop the evil Doctor Robotnik. Doctor Robotnik is trying to turn people into robots inside a giant pinball-like machine!
Sonic Spinball was created by the American team at Sega Technical Institute. This was because the Japanese team was busy working on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Sega wanted a new Sonic game ready for the 1993 holiday shopping season. So, they quickly designed Sonic Spinball. Most of the game was made in just two months! It first came out for the Sega Genesis in November 1993. Later, it was released for the Game Gear and Master System in 1994.
Sonic Spinball received mixed reviews. Some people liked the game's idea and its graphics. However, others found the controls a bit tricky. A second pinball game, Sonic Pinball Party, was released in 2003. There's even a Sonic Spinball spinning rollercoaster at Alton Towers, a theme park in the UK, which opened in 2010.
