Get ready to jump into the world of Star Wars with the video game Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. This action-packed game is based on the famous movie of the same name. It first came out on May 4, 2005. You could play it on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and Symbian OS phones.

Later, the game became available on newer consoles too. It was added to the list of games you could play on the Xbox 360. The PlayStation 2 version also came to the PlayStation Network in 2015. More recently, in 2021, the Xbox version became playable on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Gameplay

Console Versions

Revenge of the sith gameplay
In the story mode, you play as Anakin or Obi-Wan and follow the movie's plot. Sometimes, a computer friend helps you!

In the main story mode, you get to play as both Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. You'll experience exciting moments from the movie as you play through 17 levels. Between levels, you'll see cool movie clips that help tell the story.

The game is all about awesome lightsaber fights! Each character, except for the MagnaGuard, has at least one lightsaber. You can use fast attacks, strong attacks, and super strong critical attacks. You can also mix these moves to create cool combos. Sometimes, you'll have a "Saber Lock" with an enemy. This is where your lightsabers clash, and you have to win the struggle to avoid losing health.

As you play, your character earns experience points. These points let you upgrade your attacks and learn new moves. You can also improve your defensive skills. Your character can automatically block some blaster shots. For other attacks, you need to block them yourself. Besides lightsaber and Force powers, you can also kick or punch enemies. The game world is interactive, meaning you can use your lightsaber or Force powers to move or break objects.

The PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions have a cool multiplayer mode. Two players can battle each other in a lightsaber duel. You can choose from characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Count Dooku, General Grievous, Mace Windu, and more. You can even unlock Darth Vader! All characters have equal health in this mode, but they each have special abilities. You can also unlock different costumes for your characters.

After finishing certain missions, you can unlock bonus challenges. These challenges let you play as different characters like the MagnaGuard, General Grievous, Yoda, Anakin, or Darth Vader. There are also four co-op missions where two players (or one player and a computer friend) work together. For example, Anakin and Obi-Wan team up against droid armies. Another mission has Jedi Master Cin Drallig and Serra Keto fighting clone troopers.

Handheld Versions

The Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS versions of the game are a bit different. They are played as a side-scrolling game, where you move from left to right. You can choose to play as Obi-Wan or Anakin. You'll go through about a dozen levels, fighting enemies and dodging traps. Both characters have similar attacks. They can also use special "fury" or "focus" moves when a special bar fills up.

Some levels have big boss battles against characters with weapons. Other levels end with smaller boss fights against vehicles or strong enemies. The Nintendo DS version also has special 3D space battle levels. In these, you fly a ship and shoot down enemies or targets.

Just like the console versions, you can upgrade your character's attacks and abilities. You earn "customization points" by finding them in levels, breaking scenery, or finishing levels quickly. You need to manually block all blaster shots by pressing a button. If you time it right, you can even send them back at your enemies!

The Game Boy Advance version lets two players connect their systems. They can play exclusive co-op missions as Anakin and Obi-Wan on planets like Dantooine and Yavin 4. Or, they can fight endless waves of enemies to see who can last the longest. The Nintendo DS version has 3D multiplayer space battles. You can pilot famous Star Wars ships like the Millennium Falcon and battle your friends.

Plot

The game's story mostly follows the movie. It begins with Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi arriving on General Grievous's ship, the Invisible Hand. They are there to rescue Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who has been kidnapped. After fighting many droids, they find Palpatine. But then, they face Count Dooku. Obi-Wan gets knocked out, and Anakin, going against Jedi rules, defeats Dooku.

Anakin and Obi-Wan escape with Palpatine, but they are caught again. They face Grievous on the ship's bridge. They manage to escape as the damaged ship crashes on Coruscant. Anakin skillfully lands the ship, saving everyone.

Obi-Wan then travels to Utapau to find Grievous. He confronts Grievous, who sends the Separatist leaders to the planet Mustafar for safety. Obi-Wan duels Grievous while clone troopers fight droids. Grievous tries to escape, but Obi-Wan defeats him.

Meanwhile, on Coruscant, Anakin discovers that Palpatine is actually the evil Sith Lord Darth Sidious. Jedi Master Mace Windu is about to defeat Palpatine. Anakin, believing Palpatine can help him, steps in and fights Windu. Anakin defeats Windu, who falls to his death. Anakin then promises himself to the Sith. Palpatine renames him "Darth Vader" and orders him to destroy all the Jedi at the Jedi Temple. Vader and clone troopers attack the Temple. Vader defeats Jedi like Jocasta Nu, Serra Keto, and Cin Drallig.

Across the galaxy, clone troopers turn on their Jedi generals, following Palpatine's secret orders. Obi-Wan manages to escape from Utapau. Palpatine then orders Vader to go to Mustafar and eliminate the Separatist leaders. Vader brutally defeats them, including Nute Gunray.

Back on Coruscant, Obi-Wan and Master Yoda explore the ruined Jedi Temple. They find security recordings showing Anakin becoming a Sith Lord. The recordings also reveal Vader's location on Mustafar. So, Obi-Wan heads there to confront his former friend.

The two former friends have an intense lightsaber duel on the lava planet Mustafar. The facility they are fighting in slowly falls apart. They end up on a platform floating down a lava river. Obi-Wan jumps off and tells Vader to give up. An angry Vader tries to jump over Obi-Wan, but Obi-Wan cuts off his legs and left arm. Vader slides towards the lava and catches fire. Obi-Wan takes Vader's lightsaber and leaves him. Palpatine arrives and finds Vader badly hurt but still alive. He has Vader rebuilt with a special suit. The two then watch the building of the Death Star as the Republic becomes the evil Empire.

Alternate Ending

The PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the game have a special alternate ending. In the final battle between Vader and Obi-Wan, you can choose to play as Vader. If you win as Vader, his jump over Obi-Wan is successful, and he defeats his former master. After this, Vader returns to Emperor Palpatine. He gets a new, red Sith lightsaber. As the Emperor congratulates him, Vader turns on Palpatine and defeats him, taking his place as the most powerful Sith Lord. This different ending is not in the Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS versions. In those games, the story always follows the movie's ending.

Development

Nick Gillard
Nick Gillard, who was the stunt coordinator for the Star Wars prequel movies, helped make the game's lightsaber fights look real.

The game's creators got help from Nick Gillard. He was the stunt coordinator and lightsaber fight choreographer for the Star Wars prequel movies. He gave advice on how the lightsaber combat should look and feel in the game. A character named Cin Drallig, who was played by Nick Gillard in the movies, also appears in the game.

Many voice actors from the 2003 animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars worked on this game. Also, some movie clips with the original actors were used in the game's cutscenes. Alethea McGrath played Jocasta Nu again, and Matthew Wood voiced General Grievous, just like in the movie. Other voice actors included James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mat Lucas as Anakin Skywalker. Corey Burton voiced Count Dooku, and Terrence C. Carson was Mace Windu. Nick Jameson voiced Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious. Scott Lawrence voiced Darth Vader, and Tom Kane voiced Yoda and Cin Drallig. Finally, Kari Wahlgren voiced Serra Keto. A mobile version of the game for Symbian phones was released on April 2, 2005.
