Becoming a Champion: IBO Super Bantamweight Title
Winning Against Paulus Ambunda
On May 11, 2019, Fulton had a big chance to fight for a world title. He faced Paulus Ambunda, who was the IBO super bantamweight champion. The fight took place in Fairfax, Virginia. Fulton showed great skill throughout the match. He even knocked Ambunda down in the eighth round. Fulton won the fight by a clear decision from all the judges, becoming the new IBO super bantamweight champion.
Facing Isaac Avelar
After winning his first title, Fulton fought Isaac Avelar on August 24, 2019. This fight was a bit heavier than his usual weight class. Fulton won this match with a powerful body shot in the sixth round. After the fight, he expressed his desire to fight other champions to unify titles.
WBO Super Bantamweight Champion
The Fight with Arnold Khegai
Fulton's next important fight was against Arnold Khegai on January 25, 2020. This fight was for a special WBO belt and also meant the winner would get a chance to challenge for the main WBO title. Fulton started slowly but took control from the fifth round. He won the fight by a unanimous decision, meaning all judges agreed he was the winner.
Winning the WBO Title Against Angelo Leo
Winning against Khegai earned Fulton the right to challenge for the WBO title. The champion, Emanuel Navarrete, later gave up his title. This set up a fight for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title between Fulton and Angelo Leo. The fight was first planned for August 2020, but Fulton had to pull out because he tested positive for COVID-19.
The fight was rescheduled for January 23, 2021. Fulton showed his dominance, appearing faster and stronger than Leo. He won almost every round and was declared the new WBO super bantamweight champion by a unanimous decision.
Becoming a Unified Super Bantamweight Champion
Unifying Titles Against Brandon Figueroa
Stephen Fulton Jr. then aimed to unify the WBO and WBC super bantamweight titles. This meant fighting Brandon Figueroa, who held the WBC title. Their unification fight was set for November 27, 2021, in Las Vegas. The fight was exciting and close. Fulton won by a majority decision, which meant two judges scored it for him, and one judge scored it a draw. This victory made him the unified WBO and WBC super bantamweight champion.
Defending Titles Against Daniel Roman
On June 4, 2022, Fulton defended his unified titles against former champion Daniel Roman. The fight took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Fulton was the favorite to win, and he proved why. After the win, Fulton said he wanted to fight Murodjon Akhmadaliev to become the undisputed champion.
