Stock is a lovely village and a civil parish in south Essex, England. It's located about 6 miles (10 km) south of Chelmsford, which is the main town for the county. Stock is part of the Chelmsford area and is in the Maldon parliamentary area.

A Look Back: Stock's History

The exact beginnings of Stock are a bit of a mystery. Experts are still discussing how the village first started. Some old finds suggest that people lived here during the Iron Age, which was a very long time ago. However, Stock is not mentioned in the Domesday Book from 1086. This was a famous survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror.

The first written records we have about Stock are from the 1200s. For a few centuries, until the 1500s, the village was known by names like Hereward Stock or Stoke.

Long ago, part of Stock was actually in a different parish called Buttsbury. Also, a small part of Orsett was located inside Stock's boundaries. These unusual arrangements have since been sorted out.
