Discovering Sunset Zoo's History
How the Zoo Began
The story of Sunset Zoo started in 1929. The city of Manhattan bought a piece of land called Sunset Cemetery. However, some parts of this land had very rocky soil, so it wasn't used for burials. This unused area was then turned into what we now know as Sunset Zoo by the government. Even though animals were living there since 1930, the zoo was officially founded in 1933. It became a chartered park in 1934.
Early Supporters and Construction
A very important person in the zoo's early days was Dr. E.J. Frick. He was a professor at Kansas State University and volunteered for 43 years to help get animals, care for them, and put them on display. The zoo also received money from a program called the Works Progress Administration (WPA). This money helped build the first animal exhibits, buildings, and walkways. Many of these original structures, made from local limestone, are still there today. They show us a bit of history and are part of the zoo's plans for the future.
Modernizing the Zoo
By 1980, the people of Manhattan wanted a more modern zoo. This led to a new plan for the zoo's development. The city also decided to charge a small fee for people to enter. The money collected from these tickets helps pay for new buildings, improvements, and keeping the zoo in great shape. In 1989, Sunset Zoo earned a special recognition called accreditation from the American Zoo and Aquariums Association (AZA). This means the zoo meets high standards for animal care and education.
