History of Thuringia
How Thuringia Became a State
- In 1920, several smaller states in the area decided to join together. These included the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, the Duchies of Saxe-Meiningen, Saxe-Altenburg, and part of Saxe-Gotha. Also, the Principalities of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Greiz, and Gera became part of this new union. Together, they formed the Free State of Thuringia.
Thuringia in East Germany
- In 1949, Thuringia and its capital, Erfurt, became a new state within the DDR (German Democratic Republic).
- However, in 1952, Thuringia was divided into three smaller areas called Bezirke (districts). These districts were Erfurt, Gera, and Suhl.
Thuringia Today
- When Germany became one country again in 1990, Thuringia was re-established as a Bundesland (federal state) in the reunited Germany.
