Chronology
Preceded by Marsupilami

The Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show is an American animated comedy TV series. It was made by Walt Disney Television Animation and first aired in 1995. This show was a spin-off from another Disney cartoon called Marsupilami.

Disney wanted to create a cartoon that was a bit more "edgy" or wild. They were inspired by popular shows from Nickelodeon like The Ren & Stimpy Show and Rocko's Modern Life. Unlike many other Disney cartoons at the time, Shnookums & Meat only aired once a week, usually on Mondays. Only thirteen episodes were made in total.

What the Show is About

This cartoon series actually has three different mini-shows or segments in each episode. Let's meet the characters!

Shnookums & Meat

This part of the show is about a cat named Shnookums and a dog named Meat. They really don't get along! Their owners are a Husband and Wife who you never see their faces, only from the neck down. The Husband always calls their house their "domicile" before they leave, putting the pets in charge.

Pith Possum: Super Dynamic Possum of Tomorrow

This segment is a funny take on the Batman comics. It features a superhero called Pith Possum and his sidekick, Obediah the Wonder Raccoon. They fight crime in Possum City when the gorilla Commissioner Stress and the monkey Lieutenant Tension call them.

Pith Possum's secret identity is a newspaper copyboy named Peter Possum. He fights many bad guys, but his main enemy is a crazy lumberjack named Dr. Paul Bunion. Peter Possum also has a crush on a reporter named Doris Deer. She likes Pith Possum, but not so much Peter Possum! Pith Possum got his powers after a science experiment went wrong. The episode titles for this segment are often very long and use words like 'dark' or 'black' many times.

Tex Tinstar: The Best in the West

This part of the show makes fun of old Wild West movies. It's about a cowboy named Tex Tinstar, his horse Here Boy, and his friends. These friends include Smelly Deputy Chafe, Percy Lacedaisy, and Floyd the Insane Rattlesnake. They always get into trouble while chasing a group of outlaws called the Wrong Riders.

The Wrong Riders include Wrongo, Ian, and Clem. Each episode of Tex Tinstar ends with a cliffhanger. This means the story stops at an exciting moment, making you want to watch the next episode to see what happens! This was common in old Wild West movies.

How the Show Was Made

Shnookums and Meat was created and written by Bill Kopp. He also created other cartoons like Toonsylvania and Mad Jack the Pirate. The show was directed by Jeff DeGrandis. Bill Kopp was also a voice actor for other cartoons, like Eek! The Cat.

Disney even asked another animation studio, Carbunkle Cartoons, to help with the show's animation. This studio had worked on The Ren & Stimpy Show. However, they said no because the payment was less than what they got for Ren & Stimpy.

Starting on "Marsupilami"

The characters of Shnookums and Meat actually first appeared as short cartoons on Disney's 1993 series Marsupilami. Five of these original episodes were shown on that series. Later, these same five episodes were shown again as part of The Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show in 1995.

The episodes that first appeared on Marsupilami were:

  • "Kung-Fu Kitty"
  • "I.Q. You, Too"
  • "Night of the Living Shnookums"
  • "Something's Fishy"
  • "Jingle Bells, Something Smells"

Shows Like This One

A writer named Martin "Dr. Toon" Goodman once said that The Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show was one of two shows that were like "clones" of The Ren & Stimpy Show. The other show he mentioned was 2 Stupid Dogs.
