The name "Thonotosassa" comes from the Seminole-Creek language. It combines the words ronoto (meaning "flint") and sasv (meaning "some"). This tells us that the area was a good source of valuable flint, a type of rock.

After Fort Brooke was built in 1824 in what is now Tampa, a road was made. This road connected Fort Brooke to Fort King in Ocala. It ran northwest of Lake Thonotosassa and was called the Fort King Road. Today, parts of this old road are crossed by U.S. Route 301.

For a while, a Seminole village was in the area, which made it less appealing for white settlers to move in. But after the Second Seminole War ended in 1842, more people started to settle in Thonotosassa.

In 1893, the Tampa and Thonotosassa Railroad opened. This railroad connected the growing communities of Tampa and Thonotosassa with a 13-mile route. Today, the northern part of this railway, including the town's old depot, is gone. However, the southern part is still used for industrial purposes.

For fun and outdoor activities, young people in Thonotosassa can visit the Morris Bridge Road area. This area is home to Nature's Classroom, which offers educational experiences.
