Tibshelf is a village in Derbyshire, England. It is located in the Bolsover District. The village is found between the towns of Clay Cross, Shirebrook, Mansfield, and Chesterfield. In 2021, about 4,348 people lived there. Tibshelf is next to other villages like Morton, Pilsley, Newton, Teversal, and Hardstoft.
Did you know Tibshelf was home to the UK's first oil well that wasn't near the sea? Later, in the 1800s, coal was found. This made coal mining the main job, replacing farming. A local railway system was also built to help with the coal.

Life in Tibshelf: What's it like?
Tibshelf has become a popular place to live. This is partly because it's close to the M1 motorway. The motorway helps people travel easily to cities like Nottingham, Sheffield, Derby, Chesterfield, Sutton-in-Ashfield, and Mansfield.
Green Spaces and Trails
The old Great Central Railway line was turned into a walking and cycling path. This happened in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is now part of the Five Pits Trail network. This trail is about 12 miles (19 km) long. It goes from Tibshelf all the way to Grassmoor Country Park. The project even won an award in 1970!
Schools in the Village
Tibshelf has three schools for different age groups:
- Tibshelf Infant and Nursery School (for younger children)
- Tibshelf Town-End Junior School (for primary school children)
- Tibshelf Community School (a secondary school for older students)
Local Hangouts: Pubs and More
Tibshelf used to have many pubs, as many as ten at one point! Some of the pubs still open today include The Crown Hotel, The Royal Oak (now called "The Twisted Oak"), King Edward VII, and The White Hart. Other pubs like The Wheatsheaf have closed and been turned into homes.
Sports and Nature
Tibshelf has a large cricket field with a modern building for players. It's a great spot for sports fans.
For nature lovers, there are Tibshelf Ponds. These are old coal mining sites that are now two fishing ponds. You can find different kinds of fish there, like carp. The Tibshelf and Newton Angling Club manages the fishing. One pond is open for day visitors, while the other needs a special pass.
How Tibshelf Connected: Railways
Tibshelf once had two railway stations. These stations helped people and goods travel in and out of the village.
Tibshelf & Newton Station
The first station was called Tibshelf & Newton. It was part of the Midland Railway. This line opened in 1863. It closed for passengers in 1930. However, it stayed open for freight and coal trains for many more years. Today, the old railway path is a footpath, and the main station building is still standing.
Tibshelf Town Station
The second station was Tibshelf Town. It opened in 1893. This station was part of the Great Central Railway line that went all the way to London. The name "Tibshelf Town" showed that the village hoped to become an official town. Tibshelf never became a town, but the station kept its name until it closed in 1963. Even though the local coal mines closed in the 1930s, many people from Tibshelf still worked in nearby mines until the 1980s.
