Where is Upland Located?
Upland is in the southern part of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It's next to Chester Township on the west. To the north, you'll find the towns of Brookhaven and Parkside. The city of Chester is to the northeast, east, and south.
A stream called Chester Creek flows along the southern edge of Upland. This creek eventually joins the Delaware River. The total area of Upland is about 1.68 square kilometers (0.65 square miles), and it's all land.
Upland's History
The first European people to settle here were from a Swedish colony called New Sweden. They arrived in 1643 and built a town on Tinicum Island. The name "Upland" comes from a Swedish province called Uppland.
The town of Upland grew where Chester Creek meets the Delaware River. This area is now part of the city of Chester. Early colonists grew tobacco on large farms, called plantations, to send back to Sweden. Upland was even shown on an early map of New Sweden in 1654.
During this time, three different groups wanted control of the mid-Atlantic coast: the Dutch, the Swedish, and the English. The Dutch took over the Swedish settlement on September 15, 1655. Then, in 1664, the English captured the area from the Dutch. In 1676, new laws were put in place, and courts were set up, including one in Upland.
In the mid-1800s, a rich textile maker named John Price Crozer built the Upland Mills along Chester Creek. These mills made clothes for the US Army and other customers. The town of Upland officially became a borough on May 24, 1869.
Several important historical buildings in Upland are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the John P. Crozer II Mansion, the George K. Crozer Mansion, the Caleb Pusey House, and the Pusey-Crozier Mill Historic District. The Caleb Pusey House is one of the oldest buildings in the United States, built in 1696. It's also one of the few buildings still standing that William Penn visited.
Schools and Learning
Kids living in Upland go to schools in the Chester-Upland School District. Main Street Elementary School is the local elementary school. Students then go to Smedley Middle School and Chester High School.
The Crozer Theological Seminary was a religious school built in 1858 by John Price Crozer. A very famous student, Martin Luther King Jr., graduated from this school in 1951.
In 1970, the school moved and joined with another school to form the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in New York. The Old Main Building of the Crozer Theological Seminary was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The land around the seminary is now part of the Crozer Arboretum, and the Old Main building is part of the Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
