The World Masters Athletics Championships are a big sports event held every two years. It's for athletes who are 35 years old or older. These athletes are called "masters athletes." The event is organized by World Masters Athletics, which used to be called the World Association of Veteran Athletes.
In these championships, athletes are put into different groups based on their age. Each group covers five years, like 35-39, 40-44, and so on. This makes sure everyone competes fairly against people their own age.
The first outdoor championships happened in Toronto, Canada, on August 11, 1975. They used to be held every odd-numbered year. But in 2011, the rules changed, and they started happening in even-numbered years from 2016. Perth, Australia, hosted the first event under the new schedule. Later, special championships for road races (like marathons) were added in 1992. Indoor championships, held in sports halls, began in Sindelfingen, Germany, in 2004.
The championships planned for 2020 in Toronto had to be cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They tried to move it to 2021 in Tampere, but it was cancelled again. Finally, the event happened in Tampere in 2022. Other events were then scheduled for 2023 in Edmonton and 2024 in Gothenburg.
These championships are huge! More athletes take part in them than in the Olympic track and field events. This makes them "the world's largest track meet." For example, in 1989, nearly 5,000 athletes competed, while the 1988 Olympics had about 1,600 track and field athletes. Even Al Oerter, a four-time Olympic champion, said these championships felt "more like the Olympics than the Olympics."
Studies have shown that while athletes naturally get a bit slower or less strong as they get older, the overall quality of performances at these championships has actually improved over the years!
