The year 1188 was a time of important events across Europe and the Middle East. Kings and leaders made new alliances, and big building projects began. People also prepared for major religious wars known as the Crusades.

Key Events of 1188
Battles and Fortresses
- A famous leader named Saladin tried to capture a strong castle called Krak des Chevaliers in what is now Syria. This castle belonged to the Knights Hospitaller, a group of warrior monks. Saladin tried hard, but he could not take the fortress.
- In England, a new prison was built. It was called Newgate Prison and became a well-known building in London.
Royal Politics and Alliances
- Richard the Lionheart, who would later become a famous king, joined forces with Philip II of France. They allied against Richard's own father, Henry II of England. This was a big family and political disagreement!
- Alfonso IX became the new king of León, a kingdom in what is now Spain.
- Queen Tamar of Georgia, a powerful ruler, married David Soslan. This marriage helped to strengthen her rule in the Kingdom of Georgia.
Preparing for the Crusades
- Two important church leaders, Giraldus Cambrensis and Baldwin of Exeter, traveled through Wales. Their mission was to convince men to join the Third Crusade. The Crusades were religious wars to take back the Holy Land.
- A special tax was collected in England. It was called the "Saladin tithe" and was meant to help pay for the Third Crusade.
