The year 1512 was a time of important changes and discoveries around the world. Big battles were fought, famous artworks were revealed, and new ideas about our solar system began to spread. Explorers found new lands, and powerful leaders took charge of empires.
Key Events of 1512
- April 11 – A major battle called the Battle of Ravenna took place. French forces, led by Gaston de Foix, Duc de Nemours, won against the Spanish army. Sadly, Gaston de Foix was killed during the fighting.
- October 19 – Martin Luther became a "doctor of theology." This meant he had studied religion very deeply and was now qualified to teach it.
- October 21 – Soon after, Martin Luther joined the teaching staff at the University of Wittenberg. He began teaching about religion there.
- November 1 – A very famous painting, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, was shown to the public for the first time. This amazing artwork was painted by the famous artist Michelangelo.
- The explorer Juan Ponce de León discovered the Turks and Caicos Islands. These islands are located in the Caribbean Sea.
- Selim I became the new ruler, or Sultan, of the Ottoman Empire. He took over from his father, Bayezid II. The Ottoman Empire was a very large and powerful empire at that time.
- The region of Moldavia was conquered by the Turks and became part of the Ottoman Empire.
- Nicolaus Copernicus wrote a book called Commentariolus. In this book, he shared his revolutionary idea that the Sun, not the Earth, is at the center of our solar system. This was a very new way of thinking!
- The word "masque" was used for the first time to describe a special kind of play. These plays often included poetry, music, and elaborate costumes.
- The Florentine Republic in Italy was changed. The powerful Medici family returned to power, taking control of the city of Florence again.

- January 31 – Henry of Portugal, who later became a king.
- March 5 – Gerardus Mercator, a famous mapmaker from Flanders. He created many important maps.
- April 10 – James V of Scotland, who became the King of Scotland.
- Galeazzo Alessi, an Italian architect known for designing many buildings.
- Catherine Parr, who later became the sixth wife of Henry VIII of England.
