Aruba is a small island country. It first joined the Olympic Games in 1988. Since then, Aruban athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games. So far, Aruba has not won any Olympic medals.

Before 1988, from 1952 to 1984, athletes from Aruba competed as part of the Netherlands Antilles. This changed when Aruba became its own country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1986. The Aruban Olympic Committee was created in 1985 and officially recognized in 1986. As of January 2021, Aruba has not competed in any Winter Olympic Games.

Aruba's Olympic Journey

Aruba's path to the Olympics has a special history. For many years, Aruban athletes were part of the Netherlands Antilles team. This was before Aruba became a separate country.

How Aruba Joined the Games

  • 1900–1948: Athletes from this region competed with the Netherlands team.
  • 1952–1984: Aruban athletes were part of the Netherlands Antilles team.
  • 1986: Aruba became a separate country. The Aruban Olympic Committee was formed.
  • 1988: Aruba sent its own team to the Summer Olympics for the first time.
  • 2012: After the Netherlands Antilles dissolved, some athletes competed under the Independent Olympic Athletes flag.
  • 2014 onwards: Some athletes from the former Netherlands Antilles now compete with the Netherlands team. However, Aruba continues to send its own team.
