History of Belmont
Early Settlement and Forts
People started settling in the Belmont area around the 1750s. Early settlers built a fort called Fort at the Point. It was near where the South Fork and Catawba rivers meet. They built the fort because of conflicts with the Cherokee people. However, the fort was never attacked.
First Mills and Railroads
The South Point Community was about 2.5 miles (4 km) south of downtown Belmont. It was home to Stowesville Mill, one of the first cotton mills in Gaston County. It started in 1853.
After the American Civil War, Abram Stowe built a home and opened a store. He became the postmaster and railroad agent. The new Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway was built in 1871. More stores were built near the railroad stop, called Garibaldi Station. People from South Point moved closer to the railroad.
Founding of Belmont Abbey
In 1872, a Roman Catholic priest named Father Jeremiah O'Connell bought land. He gave it to the Benedictine monks from Pennsylvania. They wanted to start a religious community and school.
Belmont Abbey was founded in 1876. It was officially named "Mary Help of Christians Abbey." It is still active today and runs Belmont Abbey College.
Belmont Becomes a Town
In 1883, Garibaldi Station officially changed its name to Belmont. It was named after the banker August Belmont. In 1895, Belmont became an official town. This happened by a law from the North Carolina General Assembly.
At the start of the 1900s, Belmont was still small with only 145 people. But then, Chronicle Mills started in 1901. This began Belmont's growth as a major textile center. Many mills were built in Belmont until 1930. This caused the town's population to grow to 3,793 people.
Geography of Belmont
Belmont is in the southern Piedmont region of North Carolina. Two rivers are next to the town: the Catawba River and the South Fork Catawba River. These rivers form parts of Lake Wylie. Belmont is located on a piece of land shaped like a peninsula between them.
Belmont is about 12 miles (19 km) west of Charlotte. It is also 10 miles (16 km) east of Gastonia. The city covers about 12.2 square miles (31.6 km2) in total. Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
