Learning in Bolton: Schools and Education
Bolton has its own school for younger students. The Ellen P. Smilie Memorial School teaches children from pre-kindergarten up to fourth grade.
History of Smilie Memorial School
The school is named after Ellen Pinneo. She was born in Bolton in 1849. She went to the Pinneo Flats School, which was later destroyed by a big flood in 1927. Ellen later married Melville Smilie. She lived in Montpelier for many years until she passed away in 1933.
After the flood, Ellen donated money to help rebuild a school in Pinneo Flats. In her will, she left even more money to the Memorial School. When the I-89 highway was built, it cut off access to the old Memorial School. So, it was taken down. In 1960, part of the current school building was built. In 1999, a large new section was added. This addition included five new classrooms and a big gym. A final gift helped make the library bigger and add more books. The school works closely with families and the town.
Mount Mansfield Modified Union School District
On November 4, 2014, the towns of Bolton, Jericho, Richmond, Underhill ID, and Underhill Town voted. They decided to create a new school district. It is called the Mount Mansfield Modified Union School District, or MMMUSD.
This new district helps and manages several schools. These include Smilie Memorial School in Bolton, Jericho Elementary, Richmond Elementary, and others. It also includes Browns River Middle, Camels Hump Middle, and Mount Mansfield Union High Schools. Students from Huntington in grades 5-12 also attend schools in this district.
