Early life and education
Breland grew up in Burlington Township, New Jersey. His parents, Tonya and Gerard Breland, are ministers, and their home was always filled with gospel music.
When he was 14, Breland went to the Peddie School, a boarding school in New Jersey. There, he started listening to other types of music for the first time. He enjoyed hip-hop, R&B, country, and pop. Some of his favorite artists were '70s soul singers like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder.
Breland began writing his own songs, mixing all the different styles he loved. He chose to study business at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, instead of going to a music school. At Georgetown, he sang in an a cappella group called the Phantoms.
Musical career
Starting out (2019-2022)
Breland started his music career as a songwriter while he was still at Georgetown University. After college, he moved to Atlanta. He worked a day job selling language technology, but spent his nights writing music. He taught himself how to produce music using special computer programs like Pro Tools and FL Studio.
Over about five years, Breland wrote around 2,000 songs. He wrote almost half the songs on The Golden Child, which was the first album by R&B artist YK Osiris.
Breland often shared his original songs on Instagram. During the COVID-19 quarantine, he started a challenge called #BrelandVerseChallenge to connect with his fans. Through this, he gave two of his Instagram followers their first songwriting credits on a song called "In the Woulds." This song featured country artists Chase Rice and Lauren Alaina.
In September 2019, Breland wrote "My Truck". This song was about truck culture in rural America and mixed hip hop with country music. When he posted it on Instagram, people loved it. He realized he had found his unique style, which he calls "cross country" music.
He told the Associated Press that he felt it was time to change how people see country music. "My Truck" became a big hit, reaching number 26 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
Breland signed with Bad Realm/Atlantic Records. He then released a new version of "My Truck" with country singer Sam Hunt. The song quickly became very popular, reaching number 1 on Spotify's Viral 50 Chart in February 2020.
In May 2020, Breland released his first EP, also called Breland. It included songs like "My Truck" and "Horseride," mixing country, hip hop, R&B, and pop. This EP reached number 48 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart.
Another EP, Rage & Sorrow, came out in June 2020. Breland wrote these songs to express feelings about important events happening in the world at that time.
Breland also worked with Keith Urban, a famous country singer. They wrote two songs together for Urban's album The Speed of Now Part 1 in September 2020. Breland also sang on one of these songs, "Out the Cage."
In September 2020, Breland started his own radio show on Apple Music Country called Land of the Bre.
In March 2022, Breland released a new song called "Praise the Lord" with Thomas Rhett. His first full album, Cross Country, was released on September 9, 2022.
Recent work (2023-present)
In August 2023, Breland released a new song called "Cowboy Don't". In 2024, he was featured in a country music documentary called Rebel Country.
A song called "One Door Closes," which he made with British singer Ella Henderson, was released on March 21, 2025.
