Early Life and School
Breland grew up in Burlington Township, New Jersey. His parents, Tonya and Gerard Breland, were ministers, and their home was always filled with gospel music.
When he was 14, Breland went to Peddie School, a boarding school in New Jersey. This was the first time he heard lots of different kinds of music, like hip-hop, R&B, country, and pop. He especially loved soul artists from the 1970s, like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder.
Breland started writing his own songs, mixing all the styles he enjoyed. He chose to study business at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, even though he could have gone to a music school. At Georgetown, he sang without instruments in a group called the Phantoms.
Musical Journey
Breland began writing songs professionally while he was still in college. After graduating, he moved to Atlanta. He worked a day job selling language technology, but spent his nights writing music, sometimes until early morning. Breland taught himself how to produce music using computer programs like Pro Tools and FL Studio.
Over about five years, he wrote around 2,000 songs! He wrote songs for other artists, including almost half of the songs on The Golden Child, the first album by R&B artist YK Osiris.
Breland often shared his original music on Instagram. During the COVID-19 quarantine, he started something called the #BrelandVerseChallenge. He asked his fans to add their own verses to his songs. This led to two of his Instagram followers getting their first big songwriting credits on his song "In the Woulds."
In September 2019, Breland wrote "My Truck". This song was about truck culture in rural America and mixed hip hop with country music. When he posted it on Instagram, people loved it! He realized he had found his special style, which he calls "cross country" music.
"My Truck" became a big hit, reaching No. 26 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Breland explained that he wanted to show people that country music can be many different things.
Breland signed with Bad Realm/Atlantic Records and released a new version of "My Truck" with country star Sam Hunt. This remix was very popular, getting millions of streams and downloads.
In May 2020, Breland released his first EP, also called Breland. It featured songs like "My Truck" and "Horseride," and mixed country, hip hop, R&B, and pop. The EP reached No. 48 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart.
His next EP, Rage & Sorrow, came out in June 2020. Breland wrote these songs about important social topics happening at the time.
Breland also worked with Keith Urban, helping to write two songs for Urban's album The Speed of Now Part 1 in 2020. Breland even sang on one of them, "Out the Cage."
In September 2020, Breland started his own radio show on Apple Music Country called Land of the Bre.
In March 2022, Breland released a new song called "Praise the Lord" with Thomas Rhett. His first full album, Cross Country, came out on September 9, 2022. More recently, in August 2023, he released a new song called "Cowboy Don't." In 2024, he appeared in a country music documentary called Rebel Country.
