Burlington Township is a community located in Burlington County, New Jersey. It is a suburb of Philadelphia, a large city nearby. This area is part of the South Jersey region.
In 2020, about 23,983 people lived in Burlington Township. This was the highest number of people ever recorded living there. The township is part of a larger area called the Delaware Valley, which includes cities like Philadelphia and Camden.

History of Burlington Township
Burlington Township was first set up as a "towne" by early settlers. It was closely connected to Burlington City in its early days.
The township officially became a part of New Jersey on February 21, 1798. This happened when the New Jersey Legislature passed the Township Act of 1798. Burlington Township was one of the first 104 townships created in New Jersey. The name "Burlington" comes from the English town of Bridlington.
Geography and Location
Burlington Township covers about 14.02 square miles (36.32 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
Some smaller communities within the township include Deacons, Fountain Woods, Springside, and Stevens.
Neighboring Towns and Rivers
Burlington Township shares borders with several other towns in Burlington County. These include Burlington City, Edgewater Park, Florence Township, Springfield Township, Westampton Township, and Willingboro Township.
It also borders Bristol and Bristol Township in Pennsylvania. These towns are located across the Delaware River.

In 2010, the township had 22,594 people living in 7,797 households. About 57.2% of households were married couples.
The population included people from many different backgrounds. About 59% were White, 27.98% were Black or African American, and 7.04% were Asian. People of Hispanic or Latino background made up 7.05% of the population.
The average age in the township was 39.6 years. About 26.7% of the population was under 18 years old.
Economy and Businesses
Burlington Coat Factory, a well-known retail company, has its main office in Burlington Township. They moved here from Burlington City in 1988.
The Marketplace at Burlington was once a large indoor shopping mall. It was known as the Burlington Center Mall. The mall closed in 2018. Now, distribution warehouses have been built in its place.
Because of the many businesses and shopping areas, the number of people in the township during the day can increase significantly. It can jump from about 23,000 residents to as many as 35,000 people.
Education in Burlington Township

Students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade attend public schools in the Burlington Township School District. The district has four schools.
In the 2021–22 school year, about 3,625 students were enrolled. The schools are:
- B. Bernice Young Elementary School (Pre-K to 1st grade)
- Fountain Woods Elementary School (grades 2-5)
- Burlington Township Middle School at Springside (grades 6-8)
- Burlington Township High School (grades 9-12)
Students in Burlington Township can also attend the Burlington County Institute of Technology. This school offers vocational and technical training. It has campuses in Medford and Westampton Township.
Sports and Recreation
In 2017, a 10U Cal Ripken baseball team from Burlington Township did very well. They represented the Mid-Atlantic Region in the 10U Cal Ripken World Series. This big baseball tournament was held in Hammond, Indiana.
Transportation in Burlington Township
Roads and Highways
As of 2010, Burlington Township had over 100 miles of roads. Most of these roads are maintained by the township itself.
The New Jersey Turnpike passes through a small part of the township. This includes the Pennsylvania Extension, which is part of Interstate 95. While there isn't a turnpike exit directly in the township, you can access it nearby.
Other important roads in Burlington Township include U.S. Route 130, Interstate 295, and County Road 541.
Public Transportation
NJ Transit provides bus services in the area. You can take buses from Burlington Township to Trenton and Philadelphia on the 409 route. There are also routes (413 and 419) that connect Burlington to Camden.
The NJ Transit River Line is a light rail system. It connects Trenton and Camden. While it doesn't stop directly in Burlington Township, there are stops in nearby Burlington City. These stops are Burlington South and Burlington Towne Centre.
Notable People from Burlington Township
Many interesting people have lived in or are connected to Burlington Township. Here are a few:
- Kevin Baggett (born 1966), a basketball coach for Rider University.
- Breland (born 1995), a country music singer and songwriter.
- Thomas P. Foy (1951–2004), who served in the New Jersey government.
- Peter Hill (1767–1820), a former slave who became the first African American clockmaker.
- Ka'dar Hollman (born 1994), an American football player who played in the NFL.
- Sybilla Righton Masters (c. 1676–1720), an inventor. She was the first person living in the American colonies to get an English patent.
- Balvir Singh, a politician who serves on the Burlington County Board of Commissioners. He was the first Asian-American and first Sikh-American to win a county-wide election in New Jersey.
- Rod Streater (born 1988), an American football player who played in the NFL.
- Bryan Warrick (born 1959), a former professional basketball player.
