The Chevrolet Grand Prix is an exciting annual car race. It is part of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. This race happens every July at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Canada. The track is near Bowmanville, in Clarington, Ontario.

The first race was held in 1975. Today, the race lasts two hours and forty minutes. This length makes it easy to watch on television. In the past, this Grand Prix was also part of other big racing series. These included the World Sportscar Championship, the American Le Mans Series, and the IMSA GT Championship.

The Mosport Park track first hosted international sports car races in 1961. The very first race was the Players 200 in June, won by Stirling Moss. Later that year, the first Canadian Grand Prix took place. Peter Ryan won this race.

In 1966, the Grand Prix became part of the first-ever Can-Am Series. Then, in 1967, it became a Formula One Grand Prix. The Mosport Can-Am races continued until 1986. Mosport hosted more Can-Am races than any other track.

IMSA and World Championships

Audi Sport North America Audi R10 TDI - Winner 2008 Grand Prix of Mosport
Audi Sport North America has won the most races as a team, with 6 victories.

In 1975, the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) brought its sports cars to Mosport. Their Camel GT Challenge race was part of the Labatt's Blue 5000 Weekend. The first 100-mile IMSA race was won by Hurley Haywood in a Porsche Carrera.

The race was part of the World Sports Car Championship six times. The first time was in 1976. The last time was the 1985 Mosport 1000. This was also the last FIA World Championship event held at the track.

From 1989 to 1992, IMSA returned with races just for their GTO and GTU car classes. In 1995, faster prototype cars came back to the track. This was for the Chrysler Mosport 500 race.

Modern Era of Racing

In August 1999, the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) arrived at Mosport. This new series became the main IMSA race. It brought back powerful prototype cars. These cars were designed for the high speeds of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

Cars from Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Panoz, Porsche, and Acura raced here. They set the fastest speeds ever recorded at the track. In the 2008 Grand Prix of Mosport, Rinaldo Capello set the fastest lap during qualifying. He drove an Audi R10 TDI in 1 minute and 4.094 seconds.

Mosport was one of four tracks that hosted an American Le Mans Series race every year. This continued for fifteen years.

Muscle Milk Team Cytosport Porsche RS Spyder Evo - Winner 2010 Grand Prix of Mosport
Porsche has won the most races as a car maker, with 8 overall victories.

In 2014, the Grand Prix became part of the new IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. This happened after the American Le Mans Series and the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series joined together.

The Grand Prix was not held in 2020 and 2021. This was the first time in 25 years it was canceled. The reason was the Covid-19 pandemic.
