Costanzo Preve (born April 14, 1943 – died November 23, 2013) was an Italian thinker. He was a philosopher and also studied politics.
He was known as an important European thinker who questioned capitalism. He was also an expert on the ideas of Karl Marx. His ideas were built on Ancient Greek philosophy and the works of thinkers like Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, and Karl Marx. He wrote many books and essays about philosophy, community ideas, and universal values.

Preve's Life Story
Costanzo Preve was born in Valenza, Italy. He studied philosophy and political science in different cities. These included Turin in Italy, Paris in France, and Athens in Greece. He also learned about ancient and modern Greek languages.
From 1967 to 2002, Preve worked as a high school teacher. He was also involved in politics. He first joined the Italian Communist Party (PCI). Later, he supported a group called Proletarian Democracy. This group was formed in 1975. They disagreed with the PCI's plan to work with another big party, the Christian Democracy.
After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, the Italian Communist Party changed. Preve then looked back at his own political ideas. He started to question some of his earlier beliefs. He gave talks and joined activities with the Anti-Imperialist Camp. This group of activists spoke out against American imperialism. From 2005, he wrote for a magazine called Eurasia, which focuses on world politics.
How Preve's Ideas Developed
Preve was first influenced by a Marxist philosopher named Louis Althusser. Later, he became interested in the ideas of Georg Lukács. He did not agree with a popular workers' movement in the 1960s and 1970s.
In the 1990s, Preve again studied Althusser's work. He criticized ideas that focused too much on economics. He also questioned traditional Marxism, which believed history followed a set path. Like Althusser, Preve thought that unexpected events, or "contingency," played a big role in history.
Preve believed that the struggle between the rich (bourgeoisie) and the working class (proletariat) was only a temporary part of capitalism. He saw the 1960s as a major turning point in history. He thought it was as important as the rise of the working class in the 1800s.
Preve also focused on Karl Marx's early ideas about how people feel disconnected from their work. He even suggested that Marxism was the final stage of German idealism. Preve warned about the huge power of the United States. He worried about its cultural influence around the world. He also disagreed with the book Empire (2000) by Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt.

Preve believed that four main thinkers influenced Karl Marx:
- Epicurus: An ancient Greek philosopher. Marx studied his ideas about materialism and chance.
- Jean-Jacques Rousseau: A French thinker who inspired Marx's ideas about equal democracy.
- Adam Smith: A Scottish economist. From him, Marx got the idea that hard work creates value.
- Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: A German philosopher. His ideas on history and thought were very important to Marx.
Costanzo Preve did not believe in God; he was an atheist. He passed away in Turin on November 23, 2013.
