Courfaivre was once a small town, or municipality, located in the Jura canton of Switzerland. It was part of the Delémont district. On January 1, 2013, Courfaivre joined with four other nearby towns – Bassecourt, Glovelier, Soulce, and Undervelier – to create a new, larger municipality called Haute-Sorne.

A Look Back: Courfaivre's History
Courfaivre is an old place! Its name was first written down in a document way back in 1147. Back then, it was called Curfavro.
Exploring Courfaivre's Geography
Courfaivre covered an area of about 12.40 square kilometers (which is about 4.79 square miles). A big part of this land, about 51%, was used for farming. Forests covered almost 40% of the area. The rest of the land was used for buildings and roads (about 8.4%), or it was rivers and lakes. A tiny bit was unproductive land.
The town was nestled in the Delémont district. It was located on the right side of the Sorne river, along the road that connects Delémont to Glovelier.
What Does Courfaivre's Coat of Arms Mean?
Every town has a special symbol called a coat of arms. Courfaivre's coat of arms is described as: Gules bordered Or, a Cat Argent sejant guardant. This means it has a red background with a gold border. In the middle, there's a silver cat sitting and looking forward.
Who Lived in Courfaivre?
In 2011, Courfaivre had a population of 1,618 people. Most people in Courfaivre speak French, which is the main language in this part of Switzerland. A smaller number of people speak German or Italian.
In 2008, a little more than half of the population were women (51.4%), and slightly less were men (48.6%). Many people who lived in Courfaivre in 2000 were actually born there, or at least in the same canton.
The population of Courfaivre changed over time. In 2000, about 27% of the people were children and teenagers (under 19 years old). Adults (20-64 years old) made up almost 59% of the population, and seniors (over 64 years old) were about 14%.
Most households in Courfaivre had about 2.6 people living in them.

The St-Germain-D‘Auxerre Church in Courfaivre is a very special building. It's listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance. This means it's an important historical and cultural landmark for the whole country!
How People Earned a Living in Courfaivre

The school system in the Canton of Jura, where Courfaivre is located, works like this:
- Kids start with two years of optional Kindergarten.
- Then, they go to six years of Primary school.
- After that, they attend three years of mandatory lower Secondary school. Here, students are grouped based on their abilities.
- After lower Secondary, students can choose to go to an optional upper Secondary school for three or four years, or they can start an apprenticeship to learn a trade.
In the 2009-2010 school year, there were 162 students in Courfaivre. They had two kindergarten classes and seven primary school classes. However, there are only a few secondary schools in the whole canton. So, students from Courfaivre had to go to secondary school in a different town.
