Glovelier was once a town, or municipality, in the Jura canton of Switzerland. It was located in the Delémont district. On January 1, 2013, Glovelier joined with other towns like Bassecourt, Courfaivre, Soulce, and Undervelier to create a new, bigger municipality called Haute-Sorne.

History of Glovelier

Glovelier is a very old place! The first time it was ever written about was in the year 1139. Back then, it was known by a slightly different name: Lolenviler.

Geography of Glovelier

Glovelier covered an area of about 14.34 square kilometers (or 5.54 square miles). A big part of this land, almost 42%, was used for farming. Forests covered an even larger portion, about 47% of the area.

The rest of the land was used for buildings and roads (about 11%). A tiny bit was rivers or lakes, and a small amount was land that couldn't be used for anything. Most of the water in the area was flowing water, like streams.

Glovelier is located in the western part of the Delémont valley. It's an important spot because old roads from Porrentruy to Biel and from Delémont to La Chaux-de-Fonds meet there. Besides the main village of Glovelier, there was also a smaller area called Sceut.

Glovelier's Coat of Arms

The coat of arms for Glovelier is quite interesting! It shows a silver shield with two green laurel branches on the sides. In the middle, there are red fasces (a bundle of rods tied together), wrapped with a gold ribbon. On top of the fasces is a gold Roman helmet with a red crest.
