History of Delaware Township

Delaware Township was first settled a long time ago, in the early 1700s. A person named Colonel John Reading helped to create Amwell Township in 1708 and Hunterdon County in 1714. The township is named after the Delaware River, which runs along its southwestern side.

One special historical spot here is Green Sergeant's Covered Bridge. It's the only old covered bridge still standing in New Jersey! It crosses the Wickecheoke Creek between Sergeantsville and Rosemont. The Delaware and Raritan Canal, a historic waterway, also runs alongside the Delaware River in the southern part of the township.

Sergeantsville is like the main hub of the township. It has the local government building, the public school, and the Post Office. The township officially became a township on April 2, 1838. Later, in 1898, a part of the township was used to create the nearby Stockton borough.
