History of Eastshore
Early Days in Kansas
For thousands of years, the Great Plains of North America were home to nomadic Native American tribes. These groups moved around to hunt and gather food.
From the 1500s to the 1700s, France claimed a large part of North America. In 1762, after a war, France secretly gave this land, called New France, to Spain. This was part of a deal known as the Treaty of Fontainebleau.
Kansas Becomes Part of the U.S.
In 1802, Spain gave most of the land back to France. Then, in 1803, the United States bought a huge area from France. This was called the Louisiana Purchase. Most of what is now Kansas was part of this big purchase. The U.S. paid about 2.83 cents for each acre of land.
In 1806, an explorer named Zebulon Pike led an expedition west from St Louis, Missouri. Part of their journey followed the Cottonwood River. They traveled through what is now Marion County, passing near where Eastshore is today.
In 1854, the Kansas Territory was created. Then, in 1861, Kansas officially became the 34th U.S. state. Marion County, where Eastshore is located, was set up in 1855.
Eastshore in the 20th Century
The Marion Reservoir was built between 1964 and 1968. This large lake is a key feature of the area. Eastshore itself was officially planned and mapped out on October 13, 1969.
