New York State Route 80 is a main road that goes through the southeastern part of the town.
A Look Back at Edmeston's Past
The town of Edmeston is in Otsego County. Its western border, the Unadilla River, was set by a treaty in 1768. This was an agreement between the British and the Iroquois people.
How Edmeston Got Its Name
The town is named after two brothers, Robert and William Edmeston. They were given a large piece of land, about 10,000 acres (40 square kilometers), in what is now the northwest part of the town.
Early Settlers and Their Beliefs
The first settlers came from New England. Many of them were planning to move further west, but they stopped here. A strong Baptist influence came with these early settlers. Later, people of other faiths, like Universalists, Methodists, and Roman Catholics, also moved to the area.
When the Town Was Formed
The town of Edmeston was officially created in 1808. It was formed from a part of the Town of Burlington.
Farming and Factories
For a long time, Dairy farming was the most important business in Edmeston. To support the dairy farms, people built Cheese factories, creameries, and places to keep horses. There were also blacksmith shops and tanneries.
Small, one-room schoolhouses were common throughout the town. People used to build dams on the creeks to create power for factories and mills. Growing hops (used in beer) and making maple syrup were also popular jobs at different times of the year. Each small community in the town had its own shops and businesses.
Trains and Transportation
In 1889, a train line called the New York, Ontario & Western Railroad reached Edmeston. This made it easier to transport goods. However, rumors of extending the line further never came true. Later, cars, buses, and trucks became more common. The train line was sold in 1941 and stopped running in 1960.
Modern Edmeston
Over time, dams were removed, and electricity became widely available. The small villages in Edmeston became places where people lived but often worked elsewhere. The one-room schoolhouses closed, and a larger Central School was built in the main Edmeston village.
Today, many people who live in Edmeston travel to other towns for work. However, a company called NYCM Insurance provides many jobs for local people and for hundreds who travel into Edmeston each day. On the eastern side of town, there is also the Pathfinder Village. This is a special community for people with Down syndrome, and it also provides many jobs.
The number of people living in Edmeston has stayed fairly steady over the years. It is still mostly a rural area with farms and open land. Groups like the local Rotary Club, American Legion, and Fire and Emergency Squads have many volunteers. These volunteers help meet the needs of the community. The Edmeston Central School is a main place for activities and events in the town.
