History of Elk Grove Village

Early History of the Land

The land where Elk Grove Village is today was once home to Native American tribes. In the early 1680s, the Miami Confederacy lived here. This group included the Illini and Kickapoo tribes. Later, in the 1700s, the Iroquois and Meskwaki tribes took control.

Then, the French-allied Potawatomi tribe moved into Northern Illinois. By the early 1800s, they controlled a large area. In 1833, the Potawatomi signed a deal with the U.S. Government called the 1833 Treaty of Chicago. This treaty gave the U.S. control of the land, including what is now Elk Grove. The government then sold the land to settlers.

One of the first settlers was Aaron Miner, who arrived in 1833. He was friendly with the Potawatomi people. His family would trade cookies with them for venison (deer meat).

Founding and Growth of the Village

Elk Grove Village was officially started on July 17, 1956. It was planned to have separate areas for homes and businesses. Most of the first houses were built by a company called Centex Corporation. The business area grew to become one of the largest industrial parks in the United States.

Before the village was built, many farmers lived here. Most of them were German immigrants. Some of the main streets in the village are named after these early farming families. One large farm, Busse Farm, was later sold to become the Elk Grove Technology Park in 2018.

The village grew a lot in the 1960s. New roads, schools, and parks were added. Rupley Elementary was the first school built in Elk Grove Village. It was named after Ira Rupley, who helped plan the village.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Elk Grove Village continued to grow. New apartment buildings were constructed. However, one school, Lively Junior High, closed down. It was later turned into a recreation center and administrative offices for the school district.

In 1982, a sad event happened in Elk Grove Village. A 12-year-old girl died after taking a Tylenol capsule that had been tampered with. This event was part of the Chicago Tylenol murders case. It led to new safety rules for how medicines are packaged, making them much harder to tamper with.

During the 1990s and 2000s, the village worked to make itself more beautiful. They added a clock tower, brick crosswalks, and new landscaping. In 2006, Elk Grove Village was one of the first places in Illinois to ban smoking in public.
