Fujieda has a long and interesting history. During the Edo period in Japan, a powerful government called the Tokugawa shogunate ruled the country. Much of what is now Fujieda was part of an area called Tanaka Domain. It had a castle that helped protect Sunpu from the east.
Fujieda also grew as a post town called Fujieda-juku. Post towns were important stops along the Tōkaidō highway. This highway connected the capital city of Edo (now Tokyo) with Kyoto.
In 1889, during a time of big changes in Japan, Fujieda-juku became Fujieda Town. It was part of Shida District in Shizuoka Prefecture. On April 16, 1889, Fujieda Station opened on the Tōkaidō Main Line railway. This helped the area around the station grow and develop.
Fujieda City was officially formed on March 31, 1954. This happened when Fujieda Town joined with Aoshima Town and four nearby villages. Later, Setoya Village joined in 1955, and Hirohata Village joined in 1957. On January 1, 2009, the town of Okabe also became part of Fujieda. After this, Shida District no longer existed.
