Gabre's Early Life and Olympic Journey
Ljubica Gabrić was born in Imotski, which is now part of Croatia. Back then, it was part of Austria-Hungary. She later married Sandro Calvesi, who was a famous Italian coach for hurdles. Her family was also very athletic!
There was some confusion about her birth year. While some records said 1917, official Olympic documents from 1936 and 1948, and records from Ellis Island when she came to the United States, all show she was born on October 17, 1914. This is the date that most sports organizations recognize.
Gabre was a talented athlete from a young age.
- In 1936, she competed in the Olympic discus throw in Berlin, finishing tenth.
- She also competed in the European Championships in 1938, where she placed sixth.
- Twelve years later, she returned to the Olympics! At the 1948 London Olympics, she finished 17th in the discus throw.
- In 1950, she competed again in the European Championships, finishing seventh.
Competing as a Masters Athlete
Gabre Gabric had an incredibly long sports career. She continued to compete in "masters" events, which are for older athletes.
- In 2010, when she was 95 years old, she was still competing!
- She even set new World Records for athletes aged 95 and over (W95 category).
- She set records in the shot put and discus throw at the European Veterans Athletics Championships in Hungary.
- After another athlete passed away in 2011, Gabre was the last known track and field athlete from the 1936 Olympics who was still competing. This shows how dedicated and strong she was!
Gabre Gabric passed away on December 16, 2015, at the age of 101. She left behind an amazing legacy as a long-lived and successful athlete.
