Goodmayes is a lively area in East London, England. It's part of Ilford and is located in the London Borough of Redbridge. Goodmayes is about 11 miles north-east of Charing Cross, which is a famous spot in central London. It's also part of the Romford and Ilford postal areas.

Goodmayes used to be part of Essex, a county next to London. But in 1965, it became part of Greater London.

History of Goodmayes

The name Goodmayes was first written down in 1456. It probably comes from a family named Godemay, who lived there around 1319. There was even a farm called Goodmath shown on an old map from 1777.

A local road, Barley Lane, is thought to be named after Dorothy Barley. She was the sister of Henry Barley and the last leader of the nearby Barking Abbey in 1527.

For a long time, Goodmayes was mostly open land. But towards the end of the 1800s, London started to grow a lot. This led to many new houses being built in Goodmayes and nearby Seven Kings. A builder named A. C. Corbett built most of these homes between 1898 and 1910. He used the new train stations on the Great Eastern Main Line to help sell these new homes. Goodmayes station itself was built in 1901.

Since then, the area hasn't changed too much. You can still see many Edwardian terraced houses from that time. Some old railway areas near Goodmayes Station were closed in the 1970s. These spots were then turned into shops, like a large Tesco store and a Wickes branch.
