History of Hampton
The area where Hampton is located was once part of a disagreement between New York and Vermont. They argued about who owned the land. This problem was finally solved after the year 1790.
The town of Hampton was officially formed in 1786. It used to have other names like "Hampton Corners" and "Greenfield." A former officer from the American Revolutionary War, Gideon G. Warren, founded the town. The very first town meeting was held at his home. Many of the first people to settle here came from Massachusetts and Connecticut. The land includes parts of old land grants, which were given to British officers.
In 1783, something unusual happened to the Poultney River. This river is on the eastern edge of the town. It suddenly changed its path and became impossible to travel on by boat. This happened because a lot of water suddenly flowed into it.
People also used to mine for red slate and other colored slates in Hampton. Slate is a type of rock used for things like roofing.
A special place called the William Miller Chapel and Ascension Rock was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. This means it's an important historical site.
