A Happy Meal

A Happy Meal is a special meal for kids sold at McDonald's restaurants. It first appeared in June 1979. Each Happy Meal comes with food and a fun surprise, like a small toy or a book.

These items are usually packed in a bright red cardboard box with a yellow smiley face and the famous McDonald's logo. Often, the toys and packaging are linked to popular TV shows, movies, or other toy collections.

A Happy Meal usually includes a main food item. This could be a hamburger, a cheeseburger, a McFish sandwich, or a small serving of Chicken McNuggets.

You also get a side item. Common sides are French fries or apple slices. In some places, you might find a salad or other options.

To complete the meal, there's a drink. You can often choose between milk, juice, or a soft drink.

The exact food choices can be different depending on the country. Some places offer even more options. For example, you might find a grilled cheese sandwich or pasta. Healthier choices like apple slices or mini wraps are also available in many locations.

How the Happy Meal Started

Early Ideas and Development

The idea for the Happy Meal began in the 1970s. A woman named Yolanda Fernández de Cofiño ran McDonald's restaurants in Guatemala.

She created a special "Ronald menu" to help parents feed their children easily. This menu included a hamburger, small fries, and a small sundae.

McDonald's leaders in Chicago heard about her idea. They asked Bob Bernstein, an advertising expert, to develop it further.

Bernstein thought kids would be happier with their own packaged meal. He noticed his son enjoyed looking at cereal boxes. This gave him the idea for a special box.

He designed boxes that looked like lunch pails with McDonald's arches as handles. Artists filled the boxes with games, jokes, and stories.

Inside the first Happy Meal box was a burger, small fries, cookies, and a surprise gift. A small drink came with it.

Bernstein named it the Happy Meal. It was first tested in Kansas City in October 1977. By 1979, it was available across the country.

Bernstein was honored in 1987 for his great idea. He received a golden replica of the Happy Meal box.

Important Moments in Happy Meal History

Happy Meals often promote movies or TV shows for families. The first such promotion was for the Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979.

The packaging for the Star Trek Meal had images and games from the film. It even included a comic strip version of the movie.

Sometimes, toys have been recalled for safety. In 1982, Playmobil toys were recalled because they could be unsafe for very young children.

In 1992, McDonald's removed Batman Returns toys from Happy Meals. This happened after parents said the movie was not suitable for children.

In July 2011, McDonald's announced plans to make Happy Meals healthier. They started adding apple slices to the meals.

The redesigned meals also included a smaller portion of French fries. In February 2013, Fish McBites were added as a main item for a short time.

In 2014, McDonald's introduced a mascot named Happy in the United States. This character had already appeared in France and other countries since 2009.

The Fun of Happy Meal Toys

How Toys Have Changed

Giving small toys to children with meals was not new. But the Happy Meal made it very popular. When Happy Meals first launched in 1979, the toys were simple.

They included things like a McDoodle stencil, a McWrist wallet, or a spinning top. In Canada, there was a "Treat of the Week" promotion with different toys.

Over the years, Happy Meal toys have become more detailed. They started as simple items like a Frisbee or a ball. Now, many are linked to popular TV shows, movies, or video games.

Happy Meal toys are usually made for children aged 2 and up. Special toddler toys are for kids aged 3 and younger.

Rules About Happy Meal Toys

In some places, rules have been made about Happy Meal toys. These rules aim to help kids eat healthier.

For example, in San Francisco, a law was passed in 2010. It said that children's meals must meet certain healthy standards to include a toy.

This law was created because of concerns about childhood obesity. It required meals with toys to have fewer calories and less sodium. They also had to include fruits and vegetables, and drinks without too much fat or sugar.

In Chile, a 2012 law also banned free toys in kids' meals. This was done to help prevent obesity among children.

Happy Meals for Grown-Ups

Special Adult Happy Meals

Sometimes, McDonald's has created special Happy Meals for adults.

In 2004, they released an "Active Fit" Happy Meal. This adult meal came in a larger Happy Meal box. It included a bottle of water, a salad, an exercise booklet, and a "step-o-meter."

In 2022, McDonald's worked with the fashion brand Cactus Plant Flea Market. They released an adult Happy Meal with a Big Mac or Chicken McNuggets combo. This meal came with a collectible toy, like the brand's mascot or special versions of McDonaldland characters.

Following this success, another adult Happy Meal promotion happened in 2023. This time, it was with entertainer Kerwin Frost. It featured collectible figurines of the McNugget Buddies with new designs.

In 2024, McDonald's introduced "Collector's Meals" for a limited time. These meals included a 10-piece nugget or Big Mac combo for lunch. For breakfast, there was a sausage and egg sandwich, hash browns, and coffee. These meals came with collectible cups featuring popular brands and characters.

In 2025, McDonald's released the "McDonaldland Meal." This adult Happy Meal included a Quarter Pounder with cheese or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, fries, and a new Mt. McDonaldland Shake. It also came with a collectible tin filled with stickers and postcards of classic McDonald's characters.
