Becoming the Strongest Man
Hossein Rezazadeh was a super heavyweight weightlifter. He held the world record in the "clean and jerk" lift for many years. This is one of the two main lifts in weightlifting, where you lift the bar from the floor to your shoulders, then overhead. He was often called "the strongest man in the world" because of his amazing records.
In 2002, he was named "Champion of Champions" in Iran. The Iranian President, Mohammad Khatami, even gave him a special badge for his bravery. When he set a new world record in Poland, he received money to buy a house in Tehran.
Turning Down a Big Offer
After his great success, Turkey offered him a lot of money to compete for their country. They offered him $20,000 a month, a fancy house, and $10 million if he won gold for them at the 2004 Athens Olympics. But Rezazadeh said no! He said, "I am an Iranian and love my country and people." This showed how much he cared about his home country.
Olympic Gold Medals
Rezazadeh surprised everyone at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. He won a gold medal, which was a big deal. For decades, only athletes from the Soviet Union or Russia had won gold in the heaviest weight class. His win was the first for a non-Soviet/Russian athlete in that class since 1960!
He broke his own records again at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He lifted an incredible 263.5 kg (about 581 pounds) in the clean and jerk. His total weight lifted in both parts of the competition was 472.5 kg. This was 17.5 kg more than the silver medalist!
Retirement and Coaching
In 2006, a stadium was built in his hometown of Ardabil and named the Rezazadeh Stadium. It was built to honor his achievements.
In 2008, doctors told Rezazadeh not to compete in the 2008 Olympics. He had serious hand injuries and high blood pressure. He announced his retirement from professional weightlifting. He said he hoped his son would break his records one day.
After he retired, Rezazadeh became a top advisor for Iran's national weightlifting team. Later, he became the manager and head coach. He has publicly promised to fight against athletes using banned substances in weightlifting.
Political Career
After his amazing sports career, Hossein Rezazadeh decided to enter politics. In 2013, he was elected as a member of the City Council of Tehran.
