Early Life and School
Kim Seok-jin was born on December 4, 1992, in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. He grew up with his mother, father, and older brother. His family belongs to the Gwangsan Kim clan. In 2007, he went to Australia for a study camp to learn English.
Jin first wanted to be a journalist. However, he decided to try acting after watching the actor Kim Nam-gil in the TV show Queen Seondeok. When he was in junior high school, a K-pop company called SM Entertainment noticed him on the street. He turned down their offer at that time. Jin wanted to be an actor, so he studied Film Studies at Konkuk University and graduated on February 22, 2017. Later, he went to graduate school at Hanyang Cyber University to study other subjects besides music.
Music Career
Starting with BTS
Big Hit Entertainment discovered Jin because of his good looks while he was walking on the street. At that time, he was studying acting and had no music background. He first auditioned as an actor for the company. Then, he became a trainee to become an idol. On June 13, 2013, Jin officially started his career as one of the four singers in BTS.
As part of BTS, Jin has released three solo songs: "Awake", "Epiphany", and "Moon".
- "Awake" was released in 2016 on BTS' album Wings. Jin helped produce this song. It reached number 31 on the Gaon Digital Chart in South Korea and number six on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart in the United States. In December of that year, he shared a Christmas version of "Awake" for free online.
- "Epiphany" was released on August 9, 2018, as a preview for BTS' album Love Yourself: Answer. Billboard described it as a "building pop-rock melody". The song's lyrics are about accepting and loving yourself. The full song was later included on the Answer album. It reached number 30 on the Gaon Digital Chart and number four on the US World Digital Song Sales chart.
- "Moon" was released in 2020 on BTS' album Map of the Soul: 7. A writer from Variety called it a power pop song for the band's fans. "Moon" reached number one on the Gaon Digital Chart and number two on the World Digital Song Sales chart.
In July 2021, Jin and his bandmates were chosen as Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture by President Moon Jae-in. Their role was to help lead global discussions for future generations and improve South Korea's standing in the world.
Solo Music and Activities
In 2016, Jin worked with his bandmate V on the song "It's Definitely You". This song was part of the soundtrack for the TV show Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. They were nominated for Best OST at the 2017 Melon Music Awards. In June 2018, Jin sang on a different version of "So Far Away". This song was originally from bandmate Suga's mixtape Agust D. Jin and Jungkook sang on this new version, which was released for BTS' fifth anniversary.
Jin has also covered other songs, like "Mom" by Ra.D and "I Love You" by Mate. He released these covers online. He also hosted several Korean music award shows, such as Music Bank and Inkigayo.
On June 4, 2019, Jin released his first independent song, "Tonight", online. This acoustic song was written by Jin and bandmate RM. Its lyrics were inspired by Jin's pets. People generally liked the song, praising Jin's singing and the song's calm feeling.
Jin released his second independent song, "Abyss", online on December 3, 2020. This acoustic song was inspired by his feelings of worry and tiredness. Jin wrote and composed it with RM and other producers. He shared on the official BTS blog that his feelings about music led him to write this song.
In October 2021, Jin sang the main theme for the TvN drama series Jirisan. The song was called "Yours". On December 4, Jin released a short, fun song called "Super Tuna" online as a birthday gift for fans. It quickly became very popular after a video of him performing it was posted on the BTS YouTube channel. The video was number one on YouTube's World Popular Music Video for eight days. A dance challenge using the song also became popular on TikTok.
In August 2022, Jin worked with Nexon as a special game developer for MapleStory. This project was shown in a web series called Office Warrior Kim Seok Jin. On October 21, "Tonight", "Abyss", and "Super Tuna" became available on music streaming services worldwide. All three songs reached the top three on the World Digital Song Sales chart. This made Jin the third solo artist ever to do this.
Jin released his first solo single, "The Astronaut", on October 28, 2022. He wrote this song with the British rock band Coldplay. He performed the song live with Coldplay in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This performance was shown live in cinemas around the world. "The Astronaut" was Jin's first solo song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, reaching number 51. It also became his third number one song on the World chart.
In November 2022, the South Korean food company Ottogi announced Jin as the new face for its Jin Ramen instant noodles. A commercial with Jin was released on November 11. This partnership was very successful, helping Ottogi's sales grow a lot in 2023.

"Running Wild" was Jin's second song to enter the US Hot 100 chart, reaching number 35. Happy reached number 2 on Billboard US World Albums and number 4 on Billboard 200. It has been certified platinum in Japan and 3x Platinum in Korea. In November 2024, Jin appeared on the tvN show Handsome Guys. In December 2024, it was announced that Jin would sing the theme song for the TvN drama series When the Stars Gossip.
On February 26, 2025, Jin was again named the global brand ambassador for Jin Ramen. In April 2025, Jin appeared on Netflix's show Kian's Bizarre B&B. Tour, starting in June 2025.
Singing Style
Jin is a tenor singer and plays the guitar. In a 2019 book about BTS, experts from the Grammy panel praised Jin's strong voice and ability to control his breath. They called his voice a "silver voice". A journalist from Aju News noted that Jin's songs like "Spring Day" and "Fake Love" showed how steady his voice is. Another critic said Jin's voice is "tender, sorrowful, [and] free-spirited" and a key part of his solo song "Epiphany".
Personal Life
As of 2018, Jin lives in Hannam-dong, Seoul, South Korea.
Business Ventures
In 2018, Jin and his older brother opened a Japanese-style restaurant in Seoul called Ossu Seiromushi.
In December 2024, it was reported that Jin and chef Baek Jong-won plan to launch a new drink brand called Igin. This brand will use local products from Yesan, Baek's hometown. The expert who taught Jin about traditional alcohol on his web show, Park Rok-dam, will also help with the brand. Igin Apple Gin, a strong drink made from Korean rice and apples, is expected to be a main product. They also plan to release two ready-to-drink apple and plum, and apple and watermelon flavored drinks.
Health
In March 2022, Jin hurt his left hand and had surgery. Because of this, he could not perform some parts of BTS' concerts in Las Vegas. He also sang while sitting down for most of the band's performance at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
Military Service
On October 17, 2022, Big Hit announced that Jin would begin his mandatory military service after releasing "The Astronaut". Jin had been allowed to delay his service until the end of 2022. On November 4, 2022, Jin officially asked to end his delay so he could start his service. He joined the military as an active duty soldier on December 13, 2022, at the Yeoncheon army base. After finishing his basic training in January 2023, Jin became an assistant training instructor. He was officially discharged from the military on June 12, 2024.
