Justyna Maria Kowalczyk-Tekieli is a famous Polish cross-country skier. She was born on January 19, 1983. She started competing in the sport in 2000.

Justyna is a two-time Olympic champion and a two-time World champion. She is the only skier to win the Tour de Ski four times in a row. She also holds the record for the most wins in the Tour de Ski, with 14 victories. She has been on the podium 29 times in total during the Tour. In 2015, she won the women's Vasaloppet race. She was chosen as the Polish Sports Personality of the Year five times, which is a record!

She is part of the cross-country ski team at AZS AWF Katowice. Her coach is Aleksander Wierietielny.

Skiing Career Highlights

Justyna grew up in a mountain village called Kasina Wielka in Southern Poland. She started cross-country skiing when she was 10 years old. Her first big international race was in December 2001.

In 2002, she placed second in the individual sprint at the World Junior Championships. Her first World Cup win was in 2007, in a 10 km classic race in Estonia. She finished third overall in the 2007 World Cup season.

She won the overall 2008–09 Cross-Country Skiing World Cup title. In 2009, she received a special award called the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

World Championship Success

At the 2009 World Championships in Liberec, Justyna won two gold medals. One was in the women's pursuit race, and the other in the 30 km mass start. She also earned a bronze medal in the 10 km classical event.

In 2015, she won a bronze medal at the World Championship in Sweden. This was for the team sprint event, where she raced with Sylwia Jaśkowiec.

Olympic Games Achievements

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Justyna won a gold medal in the women's 30 km classical event. She beat Norway's Marit Bjørgen by a tiny 0.3 seconds! She also won two more medals in Vancouver: a silver in the individual sprint and a bronze in the 15 km pursuit.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Justyna won the 10 km classical race, even though she had a broken foot! She showed incredible determination.

Long-Distance Races

Justyna also excelled in long-distance ski marathons. She won the Vasaloppet ski marathon in 2015. She also won the Birkebeinerrennet long-distance race in Norway in both 2017 and 2018.

Education and Personal Life

Justyna Kowalczyk-Tekieli studied at the Jerzy Kukuczka University of Physical Education in Katowice. She earned her Master of Arts and a Ph.D. degree in physical education in 2014. Her Ph.D. research was about how training changes with new skiing technologies.

She has three older siblings: two sisters named Ilona and Wioletta, and a brother named Tomasz. In 2020, she married Polish mountaineer Kacper Tekieli. They had a son named Hugon, who was born in 2021.
