What is King Arthur and the Knights of Justice About?
The story begins with the real King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table being trapped. An evil sorceress named Queen Morgana, who is Arthur's sister, locks them away in the Cave of Glass.
Since he can't free them alone, the wise wizard Merlin looks through time for new heroes. He finds a New York football team called "The Knights." Their quarterback is named Arthur King. Merlin brings Arthur King and his teammates to Camelot right after one of their games.
Arthur King becomes the new leader, and his teammates become the new Knights of the Round Table. Their big mission is to find the Twelve Keys of Truth. Each key can only be touched first by a specific knight. Once all the keys are found, the real King Arthur and his knights will be free. Then, the football team can go back to their own time. Until then, they promise to be fair, protect the weak, and fight evil.
The new Knights have special armor and can call on their animal spirits during battles. These animals, like Arthur King's wyvern, are shown on their shields. The show had a continuous story, with both sides making progress. Even though the series ended suddenly, it was always moving towards its goal.
Meet the Heroes and Villains
This section introduces the main characters you'll meet in the series.
The Knights of the Round Table: Modern Heroes in Ancient Times
- King Arthur (Arthur King) (voiced by Andrew Kavadas) – He's the quarterback of his football team. Arthur uses his natural leadership skills to fight Morgana's forces. He often comes up with clever plans. His shield holds the Dragon of Justice, a wyvern that helps him in battle. He keeps the famous sword Excalibur in his chestplate.
- Sir Lancelot (Lance) (voiced by Scott McNeil) – Lance is Arthur's best friend and the second-in-command. He is brave and serious. His symbol is a lion, and he uses a lance as his main weapon.
- Sir Tone (voiced by Scott McNeil) – Tone is the team's inventor and blacksmith. He creates many machines based on things from his own time. His real name is Anthony. He can build almost anything using tools hidden in his chestplate.
- Sir Trunk (voiced by Scott McNeil) – He is the knights' strongman. His main weapon is a double-headed battle axe. His shield holds a giant ram that can break down walls.
- Sir Wally (voiced by Lee Jeffrey) – Wally was a guard for the football team. Now, he protects Arthur. He is kind-hearted but gets upset when he makes mistakes. His best friend is Sir Brick. His shield has a falcon emblem.
- Sir Brick (voiced by Garry Chalk) – Like Wally, Brick often acts as Arthur's bodyguard. He is very loyal to his friends. He can create huge walls by calling bricks from his chest plate.
- Sir Phil (voiced by Garry Chalk) – Phil is one of the stronger knights. He really wants to go back to his own time for "cheeseburgers and fries." His chestplate holds a club, and his shield has a black panther.
- Sir Darren (voiced by Michael Donovan) – Darren is the only knight with a crossbow. He is confident and has a girlfriend named Lady Elaine. His shield holds a giant eagle that can lift several people.
- Sir Gallop (voiced by Mark Hildreth) – Gallop is a ladies' man, always thinking of women but treating them with respect. His chestplate holds a pike. His shield has a two-headed hound. In season 2, he starts dating a peasant girl named Katherine.
- Sir Breeze (voiced by Lee Jeffrey) – He was the team's wide receiver. He talks a lot and uses modern slang. He is afraid of heights and small spaces. His weapon is a pike that shoots bolts, and his shield has a sphinx.
- Sir Lug (voiced by Michael Donovan) – Lug was the team's equipment manager. In Camelot, he leads the squires. He sometimes lacks confidence but is very brave. His shield has a kraken, and his armor can launch a football at enemies.
- Sir Zeke (voiced by Mark Hildreth) – Zeke is the team's genius. He often uses technical words when he speaks.
Camelot Characters: Friends and Allies
- Merlin (voiced by Jim Byrnes) – The powerful wizard who served the original King Arthur. He brought Arthur King and his team to the past. Merlin helps the knights with spells, potions, and advice. He is the only one in Camelot who knows the knights' true identities.
- Queen Guinevere (voiced by Kathleen Barr) – Camelot's queen and the real King Arthur's wife. Morgana captured her at the start of the show, but Arthur King and his knights rescued her. She often wonders about the new Arthur's different behavior.
- Lady Elaine (voiced by Venus Terzo) – Guinevere's helper and Darren's girlfriend.
- Lady Mary – Another of Guinevere's helpers and Squire Everett's aunt. She and Sir Tone didn't get along at first but later showed affection.
- Katherine – A peasant girl who becomes Sir Gallop's girlfriend in season 2.
- Squire Tyronne (voiced by Michael Donovan) – A squire who looks up to Sir Lug and wants to become a knight.
- Squire Everett (voiced by Mark Hildreth) – Like Tyronne, Everett is very eager to become a knight. He is Lady Mary's nephew.
- Lady of the Table (voiced by Kathleen Barr) – She protects the knights. Her spirit appears when the knights get their armor. The knights can't see her until a season 2 episode where she reveals herself to Lance. She often tells Arthur and the group to "speak the oath" to activate their transformation.
Morgana's Forces: The Villains of Camelot
- Queen Morgana / Lady Morgana (voiced by Kathleen Barr) – The main villain of the series. She is an evil sorceress who trapped the original King Arthur. Morgana hates Merlin and has strong magic. She knows the new Arthur and his knights are not the real ones, even if she doesn't know where they came from.
- Lord Viper (voiced by Garry Chalk) – Morgana's second-in-command and the leader of her Warlords. He seems to be the only human in Morgana's army. Viper hates Arthur King and often fights him with his jagged sword. His armor has a snake emblem that can attack opponents. He rides a cart that can also be a catapult.
- Warlords – These are Morgana's stone-made minions. If they are broken in battle, Morgana can put them back together with her magic.
- Warlord Axe (voiced by Scott McNeil) – Not very smart, Axe uses many ax weapons and an ax cart. He appears in almost every episode.
- Warlord Bash (voiced by Garry Chalk) – A primitive warlord who uses a bone club and a skull-shaped shield. He might represent the Saxon barbarians from legends.
- Warlord Blackwing (voiced by Scott McNeil) – The third-in-command and Viper's helper. Blackwing has Pterodactyl-like wings and can fly. He attacks with darts from his talons and uses a pike.
- Warlord Blinder – This warlord can blind his enemies by hitting his two daggers together. He can also throw them with perfect aim.
- Warlord Hammer (voiced by Michael Donovan) – A very strong warlord with two hammers as weapons. He is considered one of the strongest.
- Warlord Lucan – A fierce wolf-like berserker warlord with sharp claws and missile attacks. His wolf-head cart breathes fire.
- Warlord Slasher – This warlord has many sharp weapons, including spears and a spiky cape. He can also fly sometimes.
- Warlord Spike – A warlord with a voulge-style weapon and a spear cart that shoots projectiles. He seems to be one of the smartest warlords, leading many missions.
Episodes: Adventures in Camelot
The series had a total of 26 episodes, split into two seasons. Each season had 13 episodes, full of adventures as the Knights searched for the Keys of Truth and fought Morgana's forces.
Video Game and Merchandise
A video game based on the series was released by Enix for the Super NES in 1995. This game actually showed a final battle between King Arthur and Morgana, who turned into a giant dragon. In the game's ending, the football team was able to return home, giving the story a conclusion that the TV show didn't have.
Mattel also released action figures and vehicles based on the show. Marvel Comics published a three-part comic book series in 1993, expanding on the adventures of the Knights.
