Kriti Sanon (born 27 July 1990) is a popular Indian actress. She stars in both Hindi and Telugu movies. Kriti has won many important awards for her acting. These include a National Film Award and two Filmfare Awards. She was also listed among the top 100 celebrities in India by Forbes India in 2019.
Before becoming an actress, Kriti studied engineering. She earned a degree from the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology. After that, she worked as a fashion model for a short time. Kriti started her acting journey in 2014. Her first big roles were in the action films 1: Nenokkadine (Telugu) and Heropanti (Hindi). For Heropanti, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Kriti's career grew with successful romantic comedies. These include Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017) and Luka Chuppi (2019). She also starred in big hit comedies like Dilwale (2015) and Housefull 4 (2019). In 2021, Kriti won the National Film Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She received these for her role as a surrogate mother in the film Mimi.
After Mimi, some of her films did not do as well. However, the comedy-horror film Bhediya (2022) was liked by many. In 2024, Kriti had two more successful comedies. These were Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and Crew. Besides acting, Kriti has also started her own businesses. Kriti Sanon's Early Life
Kriti Sanon was born on 27 July 1990 in New Delhi, India. Her mother, Geeta Sanon, is a physics professor. Her father, Rahul Sanon, works as a chartered accountant. Kriti comes from a Punjabi Hindu family. Her younger sister, Nupur Sanon, is also an actress.
Kriti went to Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram. Later, she earned a Bachelor of Technology degree. She studied Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology in Noida. Before becoming a famous actress, she worked as a model for a short time.
Kriti Sanon's Acting Career
Starting Out (2014–2020)
Kriti Sanon started her acting career in 2014. Her first film was the Telugu action thriller 1: Nenokkadine. She played the main female role alongside actor Mahesh Babu. Kriti had to do action scenes in the sea for this film. She later said she was nervous because she did not know how to swim. Critics noticed her beauty and acting skills in the movie.
After filming part of 1: Nenokkadine, Kriti signed up for Heropanti. This was a Hindi action film with new actor Tiger Shroff. She worked on both films at the same time. Heropanti became a big success. Kriti won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for her role in the film. She also won the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female.
In 2015, Kriti appeared in her second Telugu film, Dohchay. She then starred in Rohit Shetty's action comedy Dilwale. This film also featured Varun Dhawan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Kajol. Dilwale became one of the highest-grossing Indian films at that time.
After a break, Kriti worked with producer Dinesh Vijan for the first time. She starred in his film Raabta (2017). In this movie, she played a character who was a star-crossed lover with Sushant Singh Rajput. The film did not do well at the box office. Kriti's next film was the romantic comedy-drama Bareilly Ki Barfi. She played a strong small-town woman who wanted a better life. The film also starred Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao. Critics praised Kriti's performance in this movie.
In 2019, Kriti worked on two more films with Dinesh Vijan. She starred in Luka Chuppi, a comedy about live-in relationships. She acted opposite Kartik Aaryan. Critics liked her comedic timing in the film. Luka Chuppi was a commercial success. After a small role in Arjun Patiala, Kriti appeared in Housefull 4. This was a big comedy film where she starred with Akshay Kumar. Even though reviews were mixed, Housefull 4 was one of the highest-earning films of the year. Kriti's last film of 2019 was Panipat. Mimi and Recent Films (2021–Present)
Kriti worked with Dinesh Vijan and director Laxman Utekar again for the film Mimi (2021). This film was a big moment in her career. She played the main role of an aspiring actress who becomes a surrogate mother. Kriti gained 15 kg for the scenes where her character was pregnant. The film was released online. Critics praised Kriti's acting in Mimi, calling it her best performance yet. She won several awards for this role. These included the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and the National Film Award for Best Actress.
Her next film was the comedy Hum Do Hamare Do (2021), with Rajkummar Rao. In 2022, Kriti starred in the action comedy Bachchhan Paandey with Akshay Kumar. This film did not earn back its production cost. Kriti then appeared with Varun Dhawan in Bhediya. This was a horror-comedy film. Critics noted her strong performance despite her limited screen time.
In 2023, Kriti starred in Shehzada with Kartik Aaryan. This film was not successful. She then played Janaki in the mythological film Adipurush. This movie was based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. Kriti said she took on the project because she felt such films could be "educational for kids." Adipurush was one of the most-expensive Indian films ever made. However, it received negative reviews and did not do well at the box office. Kriti then reunited with Tiger Shroff in the science fiction action film Ganapath. This film also faced challenges and was not successful.
In 2024, Kriti starred with Shahid Kapoor in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. This was a science fiction romantic comedy where she played SIFRA, a humanoid robot. Critics liked her look and body language as a robot. She then starred with Tabu and Kareena Kapoor Khan in the comedy Crew. The three actresses played flight attendants in the film. Both Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and Crew became successful films.
Kriti Sanon has also started her own film production company. It is called Blue Butterfly Films. Under this company, she produced Do Patti, a mystery film for Netflix. She also starred in Do Patti, playing dual roles of twin sisters. Kriti has said that her role in Mimi inspired her to find more interesting roles and have more creative freedom in her career.
