Arijit Singh's Early Life and Music Training

Arijit Singh was born on 25 April 1987 in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal, India. His father, Kakkar Singh, was a Punjabi Sikh, and his mother, Aditi Singh, was a Bengali Hindu. His father's family moved from Lahore during the Partition. Arijit started learning music at home when he was very young. His aunt was trained in Indian classical music, and his grandmother used to sing. His uncle played the tabla, and his mother also sang and played the tabla.

He went to Raja Bijay Singh High School and then to Sripat Singh College. Arijit said he was a good student but cared more about music. His parents decided to train him professionally. He learned Indian classical music from Rajendra Prasad Hazari and tabla from Dhirendra Prasad Hazari. Birendra Prasad Hazari taught him Rabindra Sangeet (songs by Rabindranath Tagore) and pop music. When he was three, he began training with the Hazari brothers. At nine, he received a government scholarship for classical music vocal training.

Growing up, he listened to classical composers like Mozart and Beethoven, as well as Bengali classical music. He looked up to musicians such as Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan, Zakir Hussain, and Anand Chatterjee. He also enjoyed listening to Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar, and Manna Dey.

Arijit Singh's Music Career

Starting His Music Journey (2005–2009)

Arijit Singh's music career began when his teacher, Rajendra Prasad Hazari, encouraged him to join the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005. Arijit was 18 years old at the time. He finished in sixth place after being voted off by the audience.

During the show, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali noticed his talent. He asked Arijit to sing "Yun Shabnami" for his film Saawariya. However, the film's story changed, and Arijit's song was not used. It was never released. After Fame Gurukul, Kumar Taurani from Tips signed him for an album that also never came out.

Arijit then participated in another reality show called 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil and won. In 2006, he moved to Mumbai to work as a freelance musician. Arijit Singh's Singing Style

Arijit Singh has said that he has a "natural voice" and doesn't do anything special to keep it that way. He describes his voice as "nasal" and believes it suits all actors. Shekhar Ravjiani, from the music duo Vishal–Shekhar, said that Arijit's "vocal texture is brilliant." He added that Arijit puts a lot of emotion and soul into every song. India Today describes his voice as "raw and grainy" and "soulful".

Arijit wants to explore classical music more. He loves singing folk music and enjoys all music styles except heavy metal music, which he finds too loud. He is often called a "romantic singer" because of his many romantic songs. Arijit says this tag was not planned, and he is happy with the songs he gets. He tries his best with every song. He doesn't think singing only one type of song limits his growth.

Throughout his career, he has tried different music styles. These include a club party song "Raat Bhar", an electronic song "Blame The Night", a Punjabi Folk song "Samjhawan", a Sufi or Qawwali song "Mast Magan", and a ghazal called "Gulon Mein Rang Bhare". Hindustan Times noted that "he can sing nice fun songs as well."

Arijit believes that lyricists should be present during recording sessions. This helps him understand the meaning and feelings behind the words of a song better. He has said his favorite lyricists are Irshad Kamil, Sayeed Quadri, and Amitabh Bhattacharya. Arijit once said, "Singing is like talking. It is an art of expression." He added, "There are no rules. You just have to practise well." He shared that his teacher, Rajendra Prasad Hazari, encouraged him to practice modern singing because Indian classical music was becoming less popular.

Impact and Recognition
