From the day she was born, Anne was known as a British princess. This was thanks to a special rule made by her grandfather, George VI. When her mother became Queen in 1952, Anne's title changed to "The Princess Anne." After she married Captain Mark Phillips in 1973, she was called "The Princess Anne, Mrs Mark Phillips."
Then, on June 13, 1987, her mother gave her the special title of Princess Royal. This title is only given to the oldest daughter of the King or Queen. Princess Anne is the seventh person to hold this title. The first was Mary, daughter of King Charles I. Anne's great-aunt, Mary, who was the daughter of King George V, held the title before her.
