List of female fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering facts for kids
The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) is a special group in the UK, started in 1976. It's like a hall of fame for the country's best engineers, innovators, and business leaders. Being chosen as a "Fellow" (FREng) of the RAEng is a huge honor. It means you're recognized for amazing achievements in engineering.
When the Academy first started in 1976, all 130 Fellows were men. The first woman was elected in 1982. By the year 2000, 13 women had become Fellows. This number grew to 33 by 2010, and 98 by 2020. The Academy has been working to include more women, aiming for 10-20% of new Fellows to be women since 2010. In 2023, 6 out of 60 new Fellows were women.
As of 2023, 137 women have been elected as Fellows. There are also 12 international female Fellows, 12 honorary female Fellows, and one royal female Fellow. The Academy wants to make sure its group of Fellows truly represents everyone by its 50th birthday in 2026.
