Early Life and Education
Lyndsey Scott was born in 1984. She grew up in West Orange, New Jersey, and was the oldest of four kids. Her dad started a healthcare company. He used to be a programmer for the government.
When she was nine, she started learning martial arts. She even earned a black belt in Taekwondo!
Lyndsey went to Newark Academy, a high school in New Jersey. She faced some tough times there. She was very thin, and some kids were not kind to her. This made her feel shy and want to hide.
After high school, Lyndsey went to Amherst College. She studied theatre, economics, and physics. Later, she decided to study computer science. She was also a talented athlete. She ran and did high jump for the college track and field team. She even earned a special award for her running. In 2006, she graduated with degrees in theatre and computer science.
Becoming a Model
After college, Lyndsey wanted to be an actress. She started trying out for roles in New York City. During college, her body changed. She started to look more like a model. Friends told her to try modeling, but she was turned down for two years. Her parents wanted her to get a computer science job instead.
However, Lyndsey had put her pictures on a website called Models.com. In 2008, a modeling agency called Click Model Management contacted her. She was 24, which was considered old for a new model. The agency asked her to say she was younger. For a few years, she told people she was born in 1990.
Even with an agency, Lyndsey didn't become famous right away. In early 2009, she was handing out flyers on a street corner. Then, she got a call from the famous fashion company Calvin Klein. That February, during New York Fashion Week, she made history. She became the first Black model to sign an exclusive runway contract with Calvin Klein. This was a very big deal in the fashion world.
Many other important modeling jobs followed. In her first few years, she modeled for Vera Wang, DKNY, Fendi, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Victoria's Secret. She also appeared in magazines like Italian Elle and Teen Vogue. In 2010, she was the only Black model to walk the runway for Prada. She later changed agencies to Elite Model Management, which was fine with her real age.
In 2013, people started noticing Lyndsey's amazing computer skills. News outlets called her "the model with a secret identity as a coder." They said she proved that fashion models are not just pretty faces, but can be very smart too. Harper's Bazaar magazine even asked her to report on a big Apple computer conference.
Her Work in Computer Programming
Lyndsey Scott started programming when she was just 12 years old. She wrote games for her TI-89 calculator and shared them with friends. At Amherst College, she learned Java and C++. She also taught herself how to write apps for iPhones and iPads using Python and Objective C.
Lyndsey is very passionate about teaching young women how to code. She is active on Stack Overflow, a website where programmers ask and answer questions. She has answered hundreds of questions and is one of the top users on the site.
She has worked with Code.org for their "Hour of Code" program. She even made a video teaching coding using characters from Disney's Frozen! Lyndsey is also a mentor at Girls Who Code. This organization teaches programming to teenage girls. She has given talks about coding at schools and mentored Girl Scouts.
Lyndsey's unique combination of modeling and coding inspires many young women. She has given speeches at important events, like at Harvard University and for the Ford Motor Company.
Apps She Created
Lyndsey started her own company, Standable, Inc., in 2011. She wrote her first apps for this company. Her first app was called Educate!. It helped a non-profit organization that supports young scholars in Uganda. Her second app was iPort. This app helped models keep their career photos and information organized digitally. Lyndsey created iPort because she needed it herself. Her paper portfolios were heavy and falling apart!
Another app she made was Code Made Cool. This app taught girls programming in a fun way. It used a "drag and drop" method with animated pictures.
Today, Lyndsey works as a lead iOS software engineer at Rallybound. This organization helps non-profits raise money. She builds apps that help them with their fundraising efforts.
In 2022, Lyndsey started the Lyndsey Scott Coding+ Scholarship. This scholarship helps students who are LGBTQIA+, women, or BIPOC and are studying computer science.
