The M1 is a very important road in Queensland, Australia. It's a major highway that connects the Sunshine Coast area to Tugun, which is close to the border with New South Wales.
The M1 is made up of three main parts:
- The Bruce Highway between Kybong and Bald Hills.
- The Gateway Motorway between Bald Hills and Eight Mile Plains.
- The Pacific Motorway between Eight Mile Plains and Tugun.
This road is part of a bigger national route called National Highway 1. The M1 signs are used for this part of the highway.

How the M1 Was Developed
The M1 road has been extended over time to make travel easier. In February 2018, a big upgrade project was finished. This project extended the M1 all the way to Kybong. Kybong is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Gympie.
The part of the Bruce Highway from Kybong to Gympie still uses the A1 road sign. Another part of the project, which will bypass Gympie, will become the next section of the M1 when it's finished.
Places to Stop Along the M1
There are several places where you can stop for a break or to get fuel along the M1. These are called travel or service centers.
- Along the Bruce Highway section:
- Caboolture (You can stop here if you're going north or south).
- Glasshouse Mountains (Also available for both directions).
- Traveston (This one is mainly for northbound traffic, but southbound cars can also get there).
- Along the Gateway Motorway section:
- Nudgee (This stop is for northbound traffic).
- Along the Pacific Motorway section:
Major Road Connections
The M1 connects to many other important roads and highways along its path. These connections help drivers get to different towns and cities. For example, the M1 connects to:
- The Bruce Highway (A1), which continues north towards Cairns.
- The Sunshine Motorway (State Route 70).
- The D'Aguilar Highway (State Route 85).
- The Gateway Motorway (M1), which leads to Brisbane and the Brisbane Airport.
- The Port of Brisbane Motorway (M4), which goes to the Port of Brisbane.
- The Logan Motorway (M6).
- The Gold Coast Highway (State Route 2).
- The Smith Street Motorway (State Route 10).
At its southern end, the M1 continues into New South Wales as the Pacific Motorway (M1).
What Was Metroad 1?
Metroad 1 was the old name for a part of the M1 road in Brisbane, Queensland. It used to connect Bald Hills to Beenleigh, a southern suburb. This old route included parts of the Gateway Motorway and the Pacific Motorway. The name was changed to M1 to make the road numbering simpler.
Past Incidents on the M1
On August 4, 2017, a truck carrying hydrochloric acid caught fire on the M1 near Loganholme. The fire caused an explosion, and a safety area of 1 kilometer (about 0.6 miles) was set up around the incident. Luckily, no one was hurt during this event.
