A Look Back: Comedy Castle History
Mark Ridley opened the Comedy Castle on January 4, 1979. It first started in the basement of a restaurant in Bloomfield Hills. Mark Ridley helped create a new way to organize comedy shows. This included an emcee, a feature performer, and a headliner. This made sure each show was well-organized.
The club moved six times in its first 11 years. In 1990, the Comedy Castle found its permanent home. It is now in Royal Oak and can seat 400 people. It is the oldest comedy club still open in Michigan.

In 1996, Bill Engvall recorded his first comedy album at the Comedy Castle. It was called “Here’s Your Sign.” His second album, “Dorkfish,” was recorded there in 1998. Both albums sold millions of copies.
