Marc David Maron (born September 27, 1963) is an American stand-up comedian, podcaster, writer, and actor. He is known for his unique style of comedy and for hosting the popular podcast ... with Marc Maron.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Maron was a frequent guest on late-night talk shows. He appeared many times on Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He also hosted Comedy Central's Short Attention Span Theater from 1993 to 1994. Maron was a regular on the radio network Air America from 2004 to 2009. There, he hosted The Marc Maron Show and co-hosted other programs.
His podcast, ... with Marc Maron, has featured interviews with many famous people. A notable episode in 2015 included an interview with President Barack Obama.
From 2013 to 2016, Marc Maron starred in his own IFC television comedy series, Maron. He also helped produce and write the show. From 2017 to 2019, he co-starred in the Netflix comedy series GLOW. Maron also had a small role in the 2019 film Joker. He provided the voice of Mr. Snake in the animated film The Bad Guys (2022).

Early Life and Education
Marc Maron was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. His mother is Toby and his father is Barry Ralph Maron, who was an orthopedic surgeon. Marc has a younger brother named Craig.
Maron comes from a Jewish family. His family originally came from Poland and Ukraine. He lived in Wayne, New Jersey until he was six years old. Maron's father joined the U.S. Air Force for two years. During this time, the family moved to Alaska.
When his father left the Air Force, they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. His father started a medical practice there. Maron lived in Albuquerque from third grade through high school. He graduated from Highland High School. In 1986, Maron graduated from Boston University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature.
Comedy Career
Maron first performed stand-up comedy in 1987 when he was 24 years old. His professional comedy journey began at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles. He became friends with comedian Sam Kinison there. Later, he moved to New York City. He became part of the New York alternative comedy scene.
Maron continued to perform stand-up comedy and also appeared on television. His voice was used in episodes of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. He hosted Short Attention Span Theater for a period. He also recorded half-hour comedy specials for HBO and Comedy Central Presents. He performed in comedy shows that raised money for charity.
His first one-man show was called Jerusalem Syndrome. It had a long run off-Broadway in 2000. It was also released as a book in 2001. In 2009, he started working on another one-man show, Scorching the Earth.
In May 2008, he toured with comedians Eugene Mirman and Andy Kindler. Their show was called Stand Uppity. In January 2009, he started a video webcast with Sam Seder. This show became Breakroom Live with Maron & Seder. It was produced by Air America. The show was webcast live on weekdays. It was canceled in July 2009 due to financial reasons.
Maron's stand-up comedy is known for being very open and honest. He often talks about his relationships with his family and friends. He also explores his connections with other comedians. In October 2013, Maron released his first hour-long special on Netflix, called Marc Maron: Thinky Pain. He followed this with another special, More Later, in December 2015.

Kliph Nesteroff's 2015 book The Comedians was dedicated to Maron. His 2023 special From Bleak to Dark was named the top comedy special of 2023 by New York magazine.
Radio Work
In 2004, Marc Maron co-hosted Morning Sedition on the liberal talk radio network Air America. This show aired weekday mornings. It was known for its sketch comedy and interviews. In late 2005, Maron's contract was not renewed. His last Morning Sedition broadcast was in December 2005.
On February 28, 2006, Maron began hosting a nighttime radio program. It was for KTLK Progressive Talk 1150AM in Los Angeles. The show was called The Marc Maron Show. It was often delayed because of sports events. This show was never broadcast nationally.
In 2008, Marc and Sam Seder started a daily show called Maron v. Seder. It was produced by Air America Media. The show later became Breakroom Live with Maron & Seder in 2009. It could be watched on Air America Media's website. On July 15, 2009, Air America Media canceled Breakroom Live. The hosts said it was for financial reasons.
Film and Television Roles
Maron had a small role in the 2000 film Almost Famous. He played an "angry promoter" in the movie. He was also featured in the 1997 mockumentary Who's the Caboose?. In 2019, Maron starred in the comedy film Sword of Trust. In 2020, Maron played publicist Ron Oberman in the movie Stardust.
In 2012, he provided the voice of Magnus Hammersmith in three episodes of Metalocalypse. Maron also appeared as himself on his friend Louis C.K.'s show Louie twice.
Maron, a television series created by and starring Maron, premiered on IFC on May 3, 2013. The show was based loosely on Maron's life. It showed him as a comedian running a podcast from his garage. Maron appeared in all 51 episodes of the show from 2013 to 2016. He played a fictional version of himself. The show ended in 2016 after four seasons. Maron also directed two episodes of the show.
Maron played a supporting role in Todd Phillips's 2019 film Joker. He appeared alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro.
In addition to his own show, Maron voiced the raccoon Randl on 12 episodes of the Nickelodeon show Harvey Beaks from 2015 to 2016. He appeared in the Netflix series Easy as a graphic novelist. Maron also appeared on two episodes of Girls in 2015.
From 2017 to 2019, Maron co-starred in the Netflix comedy GLOW. For his role, he was nominated for several awards. He was cast in a supporting role for the 2022 film To Leslie. He also played the role of landlord Gideon Perlman in the Amazon web series The Horror of Dolores Roach.
Music Involvement
In 2013, Maron played a guitar solo on the song "Party at the NSA" by the music duo Yacht. This song was a protest song about government surveillance programs. Money from the song went to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group. Maron said he was a fan of the band.
In an interview, Maron stated he was surprised they asked him to play guitar. He said he was only good at one thing on the guitar, and it happened to be what they needed. Reviews for his guitar solo were positive. Spin magazine called it a "shredfest." Maron also wrote and performed music for his film Sword of Trust.
Personal Life
Marc Maron lived in Astoria, Queens, through the 1990s and 2000s. He moved back to Los Angeles in late 2009. Maron often talks about caring for many stray cats that he takes into his home. After his cat Boomer went missing, Maron started saying "Boomer lives!" at the end of his podcasts. He later added a cat named Buster Kitten to his home. His cat LaFonda passed away in December 2019. After she passed, Maron briefly changed his podcast ending to "LaFonda lives!". His cat Monkey died in August 2020. Now, he usually ends his podcast with guitar playing and the phrase "Boomer lives... LaFonda... Monkey... Cat angels everywhere!" Maron currently lives in Glendale, Los Angeles, with his two cats, Buster and Sammy.
Maron has been married twice. His first wife was Kimberly Reiss and his second was Mishna Wolff, who was also a stand-up comedian. Both of these relationships have been mentioned in his comedy acts.
On October 14, 2013, Maron announced on his podcast that he had broken up with his former fiancée, Jessica Sanchez. He then had a five-month relationship with Moon Zappa. Starting in late 2019, he began talking about his relationship with director Lynn Shelton. She directed the 2019 film Sword of Trust, which starred Maron. Maron and Shelton were together until her unexpected death in 2020. As of 2023, Marc is dating a woman named Kit.
