Mingora (Pashto: مینګورہ, Romanised: Minga Wara) is a lively city in the Swat District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It sits right by the Swat River. Mingora is the third largest city in its province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It's also the 26th largest city in all of Pakistan. This city is super important for social, cultural, and economic activities in the Malakand Division. It's the biggest city in the northern part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A Look Back: Mingora's History

The area around Mingora has been home to people for a very long time.

Ancient Times: Early Settlers

Archaeologists have found ancient graves near Mingora. At places like Loe Banr and Butkara II, they discovered 475 graves. These graves are from a group of people called Indo-Aryan peoples. They date back to between 1520 and 170 BC. Two horse skeletons were also found.

Across the Swat River at Aligrama, another ancient site was found. This site belongs to the Gandhara grave culture. It dates back to about 1000 BC.

Buddhist Era: Monks and Stupas

Later, Buddhism became very popular in this region. Monks from other areas came and spread their beliefs. Under Emperor Ashoka, Buddhism grew strong here. This area became a starting point for Buddhist missionaries. They traveled to western regions like the Mediterranean and West Asia.

Many Buddhist remains and carvings have been found near Mingora. In the Jambil River Valley, a stupa (a dome-shaped Buddhist shrine) and a monastery were found at Panr. These date back to the 1st century CE. An ancient traveler named Faxian said he saw the biggest Buddhist monastery in Mingora. He also saw large carvings of Buddha's footprints on the hillsides at Teerat.

Excavations at the Butkara Stupa near Mingora showed a huge central stupa. It was surrounded by over 200 smaller stupas. Pakistani archaeologists discovered these in the 20th century.

Later Rulers: Hindus and Muslims

After Buddhist rule ended, the Hindu Shahis took control. Their rule brought Hinduism back to the region. This was after many centuries of Buddhist influence. Their time as rulers ended when the Islamic empire of Mahmud Ghazni rose to power.

Modern Challenges and Recovery

In 2007, the Taliban took over Mingora for a while. This greatly changed the traditional way of life in the city. However, the Pakistani army launched an operation called Operation Rah e Raast in 2009. This operation successfully brought Mingora back under Pakistani control.

Today, much of the city's money comes from trade and tourism. People from nearby areas like Dir and Shangla often come to Mingora to buy and sell goods.
